First Union Missionary Baptist Church

First Union Missionary Baptist Church Rev. Dr. John C. Harris, Pastor First Union Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1891 under the pastoral leadership of Rev. W. C. Edmond.

Worship services were held in Bradford Hall for the first two years, then services were moved to a home on the corner of Davis Street and 38th Avenue. Shortly thereafter, the first church was built at First Union's current location. From its inception, First Union has readily established auxiliaries and groups to meet the needs of the congregation and local community. The church and its auxiliarie

s are represented in the local, district, state, and national affiliations. During the 1960's, First Union stood out as the church unquestionably supported the civil rights movement. The congregation provided a place of refuge along with a place to meet and assemble. The membership felt a part of that progressive movement. Today First Union is a congregation which shows compassion and concern for its members and the community. The auxiliaries work to strengthen the spiritual and physical wellbeing of the members. On January 1, 2006, the Reverend Melvin J. Hendricks was installed as the ninth pastor of First Union. His vision for the Historic First Union Missionary Baptist Church is to be a people of God who would grow spiritually through a Christ Centered Ministry of Worship, Preaching, Prayer, and Mission/Ministry. Throughout its long history, First Union Baptist Church has been blessed to have capable leaders; it continues in this tradition.
