How does Jesus describe HIS love for His disciples? On the night of his death, Jesus shares the overflowing, eternal, joyful love of the Trinity with his disciples, not a lesser version, but the very same love the Father has for him.

At Babel, humanity gathered to make a name for itself.

One language. One voice. One united rebellion reaching toward the heavens apart from God.

And so the Lord scattered them.

Languages became a sign of division. Nations fractured. Humanity splintered under the weight of its pride.

But at Pentecost, the curse begins to reverse.

The Spirit falls, and suddenly the nations hear the mighty works of God proclaimed in their own tongues. Parthians, Medes, Egyptians, Romans. Languages that once divided are now gathered around one Name above every name: Jesus Christ.

Babel was humanity trying to ascend to heaven by its own power.
Pentecost is heaven descending to humanity by grace.

And this is why Pentecost is about the reign of Christ the King.

The risen Jesus has ascended to the Father’s right hand, and from His throne He pours out the Holy Spirit upon the Church. The Spirit does not erase languages or cultures. He redeems them. He gathers scattered peoples into one kingdom under one Lord.

At Babel, humanity said, “Let us make a name for ourselves.”
At Pentecost, the Church proclaims the only Name that can save.

The fire of Pentecost is the announcement that the crucified and risen King is reigning now, and His kingdom is gathering people from every tribe, tongue, and nation into one Body.

All giving glory to one name: Jesus the Christ!

The Good Shepherd does not abandon the weak or rush the wounded. He knows how to care for limping sheep. He does not shout, “Keep up” or “Don’t fall behind.” He walks with patience, carries with strength, and stays with those who are not better yet. If your soul feels weary today, take heart. Jesus is gentle with the hurting and faithful with the slow healing. You are not forgotten in the flock. Share with someone who needs to hear this.

Many Christians only realize Jesus's presence after the fact. The disciples didn't notice His warmth in the moment, but later understood their hearts were burning the entire time.

Some of us know what it is to feel our faith go cold.

In Luke 24:13–35, the risen Jesus walks with two discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus. Their hearts are heavy, their hope is dim, and yet everything begins to change when Christ opens the Scriptures and is made known in the breaking of the bread.

This sermon is about why faith grows cold, and how Christ meets us again by bringing us under his Word and to his table so that our hearts might burn again.

“Burn me, O Lord, with a fiery zeal of thee and thy house, which doth in eating heal.” - John Donne (1572-1631), Priest & Poet

As a young man, John Donne aspired for power and influence in Elizabethan English society. He sought heroism and glory in the English navy and hoped to one day have a seat in Parliament. While serving as the private secretary to an English nobleman, Donne fell deeply in love with the nobleman’s daughter, Anne. The marriage was forbidden, but John and Anne married secretly. When Anne’s father discovered what had happened, he threw Donne into prison. Donne spent years in poverty, illness, debt and depression, grasping for a way to provide for Anne and their children. Anne remained an inspiration for Donne through this dark time and his love for her grounded him and pushed him toward the life of a clergyman. He was ordained in 1615 and became renowned for his inspired sermons and poetry. Donne’s poetry, fueled by his faith, is considered to be among the greatest expressions of love in the English language.

O God, our heavenly Father, you raised up your faithful servant John Donne to be a pastor in your Church and to feed your flock: Give abundantly to all pastors the gifts of your Holy Spirit, that they may minister in your household as true servants of Christ and stewards of your divine mysteries; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
