📣 Attention WLS graduating classes of 1992, 2002, 2017, and 2024!

Letters encouraging your attendance at the Celebration of Ministry Retreat in 2027 have been mailed to your congregation's lay leaders. We hope these letters will help them understand the value of this gathering and encourage them to support your participation. We pray this communication will serve as a helpful reminder of the blessings that come through continuing education, fellowship, and time spent together around God's Word.

📬 Pastors, check your inbox! The newest issue of "The Four Branches" review went out this morning.

Each month, this newsletter offers four short articles—one from each of the four branches of theology: exegetical, systematic, historical, and practical. It's designed to be an easy way to revisit something you may have learned but forgotten, discover something new, and find resources for digging deeper.

Find the articles here: https://www.wls.edu/four-branches-august-2026/

Pastors, are you looking ahead to Proper 18? This month's Peer Reviewed & Peer Recommended highlights two journal articles to strengthen your sermon preparation for September 6.

D. A. Carson explores Galatians 2:11–16 and how doctrinal compromise can arise from misplaced compassion or pressure to fit in, while Jeffrey A. Gibbs and Jeffrey J. Kloha examine Matthew 18:15–20 as part of a “crescendo of care” focused on seeking and restoring the straying believer.

Who is you? And does that matter?

Artificial intelligence has made it possible to give the impression that something is from “you” when in fact the source is only a machine. Does that matter?

Professor Stephen Geiger shares how AI forces us to think about the importance of the human. What role do we have? What makes us unique? What impact does that have on our use of AI?

The Grow in Grace Professional Development Plan (PDP) on MyWELS Cloud can be updated at any time. We encourage pastors to review and update their PDP each summer when updating their WELS profile and to discuss it at their first circuit meeting of the fall.

The PDP benefits both pastors and Grow in Grace. It encourages thoughtful planning for continued growth in ministry while helping Grow in Grace plan, produce, and promote resources, courses, and events that will best serve pastors across the synod.

Circuit pastors and all pastors, please consider setting aside thirty minutes to an hour at your first fall circuit meeting to update and discuss your PDPs. Pairing up for this exercise can lead to fruitful discussion, idea sharing, and mutual accountability.
