Palestine Bible Church “When The Gavel Falls” Romans 2:5-11 June 6, 2026

The Grace of God: Almighty Eternal God exists and functions as a Forever Father to all the sinful human race. Please stop and listen to the heart of God. His incredible grace and truth calls mankind to come in faith to receive His risen Son.

Is your eternity anchored in these words? “I have come to believe and confess Jesus Christ as Lord of my life and risen Savior.” Oh, the wondrous grace poured out upon us undeserving sinners! “The Wondrous Grace of Jesus”!: let it transform my heart and life to be ever repentant before You.

Perfection of God: Our awesome God is so perfect. He is perfect in His eternality, His holiness, His wisdom, His omnipotence, His sovereignty, and His mercy. God the Father is perfect in His lovingkindness, His grace, and His patience.

II Peter 3:9; “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

Our Heavenly Father is also perfect in His judgment. Revelation 20:11-15; “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from His presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and the books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the Lake of Fire.”

Christ will be all mankind's judge. Yes, the gavel will fall. The Apostle Paul shares the bad news that everyone deserves eternal punishment for their unrighteousness and sin. How wonderful is Christ's sacrifice as it covers me in His righteousness and forgives my sins. The gavel will fall but faith in Christ saves!

Come and join us Sunday morning at 10:30 at the Palestine Bible Church for the good news of Christ's salvation.

TEN STEPS OF SPIRITUAL DRIFTING. HEBREWS 2:1-4

I believe this great book is addressed to three specific subgroups of readers all united under the umbrella of a specific, mainly Jewish audience in one location. The three groups are:

1. Those who fully receive Jesus Christ as God’s saving substitute sacrifice and ultimate revelation, but are tempted to hang on to their old ways.

2. Those who intellectually accept Christ but remain non-christians (6:4-6)

3. Those traditional Hebrews who were not convinced that Christ’s sacrifice was the basis of God’s New Covenant of eternal life with Him. (chapter 9)

The Spirit of God perfectly delivers the perfect warnings to all believers and non believers “Hold on to your faith” so you don’t drift away or “back” to old beliefs. Time to attach your anchor to Christ and pull yourself towards spiritual maturity.

5 Warnings in the Book of Hebrews
Don’t drift away from Christ, His salvation, and God’s proof of His Son’s salvation.
Don’t allow your heart to become progressively hardened and fall away from God.
You must know and understand the awesome truths of God in your heart.
Deliberate and continuing sin shows the rejection of Christ’s sacrifice.
Don’t reject the One, True, Holy God of Heaven for He is a “consuming fire.”

Hebrews 2:1-4; “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” (pararreo: drift away, flow past, slip away)

Drifting away is embracing tragedy one step at a time. Is it possible to drift past the call of God to receive eternal salvation in Jesus Christ? The longer a person allows themselves to “drift away” the more complacent and comfortable they are resisting God’s will.

“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” Drifting spiritually can be so quiet, so easy, and yet it has so great a tragedy. Either someone misses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, or they face the judgment of a wasted redeemed life on Earth. The superiority of Christ above all is proclaimed in Hebrews chapter one. Everyone will face judgment either as a non-believer or a believer. Jesus Christ has been absolutely proven to be the only Savior for all mankind by God the Father. Pay much closer attention, “wake up to the truth and drift no more.”

Romans 1:18-32 is God’s real, eternal, perfect truth. This Sunday , May 17th, our congregation will dig deep into this treasure.

All people are accountable to God for their sins. All people are responsible for their sins. The two “objects” of God’s wrath are sins identified as either “ungodliness” and “unrighteousness.” The Apostle Paul teaches us that rebellious people “suppress” God’s truth and they are “without excuse” as they travel down the “Path to Wrath.”

The servant heart of the Apostle Paul wants all mankind, both Jew and Gentile, to stop where they are and realize how hopelessly desperate they are not believing God’s truth. The Gospel is the “power of God for salvation for everyone who believes.” The “path to wrath” is filled with everyone who suppresses God’s truth in ungodliness and unrighteousness. The path to Heaven is painted in the blood of Christ, declared eternally true by the resurrection of Jesus Christ and secured by the power of God.

Now that the Apostle Paul has acquainted us with God’s Gospel revealed to all humanity through the sacrificial and substitutionary ministry of Jesus Christ….(Vss. 1:1-7);

Now that we have been exposed to the incredible servant’s heart possessed by the Apostle Paul and our need to possess the same servant’s heart to spread the Gospel today….(Vss. 1:8-15)

Now….Romans 1:16,17; “I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the Gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from the first to last, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.”

Illustration: Our United States military branches often address defending our great country with attitude! When the need is drastic, when the situation is beyond urgent, when the danger level is through the roof, our troops respond in determination and unity, “Anytime, anywhere, anybody.” My father’s “greatest” generation said, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

The Apostle Paul knew to effectively serve Almighty God in the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ required toughness. Toughness that was strengthened through faith in his sovereign God even when the greatest enemy was his own fears and weaknesses. Paul had faced incredibly difficult preaching situations and oppositional crowds on his three missionary tours. He was imprisoned in the Roman jail at Philippi, smuggled out of both Damascus and Berea, chased out of Thessalonica, ridiculed in both Corinth and Athens, and denounced as a blasphemous lawbreaker by the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem. Even tougher, Paul was stoned and left for dead at Lystra.

How could Paul be so tough and confident? How could this mere man be so trusting in the sovereignty of God? How could this Apostle stand so strong and bold against his whole known world with this “Anytime, Anywhere, Anybody” resolve and proclaim “I am not ashamed of the Gospel!” Paul knew the Gospel was knowing the truth about Jesus Christ!

Come and join us this Sunday at 10:30 am at the Palestine Bible Church!

Romans has been called the Magna Carta of Christianity. I like to compare this Epistle to the United States historical documents. Like our Constitution, Romans declares the purpose of Christianity: “so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (5:21) As we consume and apply Romans, this treatise declares that our Triune God holds the eternal power of all legislation, executive actions, and judicial functions. Christ is the fulfillment of the law, He is our Lord, Savior, and Master, and He is the eternal judge of all.

Instead of a Bill of Rights, Romans presents a bill of righteousness. “But thanks to be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” (6:17,18)

America treasures the Declaration of Independence. Romans is every believer’s “Declaration of Dependence.” The Apostle Paul's heart desire is for everyone to have full dependence (heart belief) in Christ, the living Word. “The Word is near you, it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the Word of faith we are proclaiming.” (10:8)
“That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (10:9-10)

We all have our names signed to God’s Declaration of Dependence….signed in the saving, sanctifying, and strengthening blood of Jesus Christ!

The entire book of Romans is built on the foundation of Habakkuk 2:4; "but the righteous (just) will live by his faith." Toward the end of Paul's third missionary tour while in Corinth, the Apostle was inspired by God the Spirit to write the Epistle to the Romans. (57 AD)

Romans has been christened and described in many ways. This book has been labeled the Apostle Paul's "Magnum Opus" or greatest work. One scholar called Romans "The quintessence and perfection of saving doctrine." Martin Luther said Romans was the "purest Gospel".

Believers, Romans is a "delight to the greatest logician" , capable of "captivating the mind of the consummate genius" and yet bring tears to the humblest soul". John Calvin called Romans, "our entrance into all the most hidden treasures of Scripture". We at the Palestine Bible Church call Romans our "Treasure Map" to discover the most precious truths of God.
