According to the May 2014 issue of The Groundhog: One of the most interesting historical details about Bankhead involves a marker identifying a man named Luke Smith as the first person buried at Bankhead Cemetery. The 2014 article reports that a marker bears the inscription: LUKE SMITH — First Person buried in Bankhead Cemetery.

However, the article also indicates uncertainty about the cemetery's earliest history. The marker alone does not establish the precise date of the first burial.

Another notable grave marker identifies Jonathon Crow, a veteran associated with Derrick's Company of the Georgia Mounted Militia during the Indian War. His marker reportedly gives the years 1806–1889.

The article reports that the earliest clearly discernible burial dates were around 1891, despite the cemetery's reported establishment several decades earlier.

This raises an interesting historical question: Was Bankhead Cemetery originally a family burial ground that later became a community cemetery?

(The deed establishes that on March 9, 1896, the Alabama State Land Company executed a conveyance of two acres of land to three trustees for Bankhead.)

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey recently announced the appointment of Ron Burgess, Fred Johnson, Demarcus Joiner, and Quinton Ross to the Alabama Public Service Commission.

We are especially proud to congratulate Dr. Fred Johnson, who serves as Secretary of the Bankhead Cemetery Association and is the former CEO of Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative. Dr. Johnson has been a valued member of the Bankhead Cemetery Board of Directors, and we are grateful for his leadership, dedication, and service.

The graveside service and burial for Joan Harrison will be held today, Friday, June 5, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Bankhead Cemetery.

Mrs. Harrison's family has expressed their appreciation for the kindness shown by the community. At the request of her daughter, those attending Bankhead Cemetery Decoration Day recently joined in singing "Precious Memories" in her honor, a meaningful tribute to her life and memory.

Family and friends are invited to attend today's graveside service as we gather to celebrate Joan's life and commit her to her final resting place.

"Precious memories, how they linger, how they ever flood my soul."

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Harrison family during this time of loss.
