We just returned from a short road trip down to Lower Big Fork Cemetery! I try to go at least once a month, especially to check on our flowers, which some tend to get blown around, especially the saddle on my Aunt Cecil’s stone! The cemetery looks very nice, thanks to Brian White, our caretaker!!!

Kudos go out to the Arkansas Highway Department for repaving their part of the Bill’s Place/Opal Road and to the Polk County Road Department for paving on down to the old Opal store! It sure makes it a lot smoother!!!

There were only seven, 7, of us who attended Decoration at Lower Big Fork Cemetery this morning! We sang a few songs and had a short business meeting before we adjourned for this year!! The cemetery was freshly mowed, and the graves were beautifully decorated!

In a unanimous show of hands, we voted to begin charging $250 to open a grave, said funds to be used for cemetery maintenance. If you feel led to contribute to this worthwhile cause, please send your donation to Big Fork Cemetery Association, PO Box 794, Mena, AR 71953. All monies will be used to pay to keep the cemetery mowed and maintained.

This is the sign that will be hung at the cemetery today and it is a reminder that, when you clean the old flowers off of your graves, please put them in the trash barrels or take them home with you!!! Some anonymous person cleaned up the terrible mess of old flowers that were piled up next to the barrel and we don’t want the unsightly mess there again!

Update: we have learned that the James family were responsible for cleaning up the big mess of flowers that had been thrown on the ground and over the fence! We really do appreciate their efforts to make the cemetery more clean and beautiful!

Please remember that the annual Decoration service at Lower Big Fork Cemetery will be two weeks from today, Sunday, May 17, at 11:00 a.m. and everyone is invited to come and honor your loved ones who are buried there in that beautiful final resting place!!

We would ask that those who will be going to clean the graves, please place old flowers in the trash barrels that are there, or take them home with you to properly dispose of them! Recently someone very graciously, and anonymously cleaned and/or covered the unsightly bunch of flower debris that had been thrown along the fence line!!

Please remember that the Decoration Day service is on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., always the 3rd Sunday in May!!! I always go and clean our graves the week before, take our flowers and decorate the day before, then go back for the short service and visiting on Sunday morning!

Please make plans to attend the 2026 Decoration service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 17. We usually go down to clean the graves and decorate early on the day before, which will be on Saturday, May 16.

My name is Linda Ferguson Fryar and I was elected at the 2025 Decoration service as secretary of the Lower Big Fork Cemetery Association.

My goal in setting up this page is to keep all interested parties apprised of the goings-on at the cemetery. The 2026 Decoration service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 11:00 in the morning.
