Tabor Church began on Saturday, February 25, 2012 in the home of James and Monica Macon in southeast Memphis, TN (Southwind Neighborhood). God's purpose for the church was to provide a place of worship, Christian education and prayer for individuals who worked on Sunday morning and/or afternoon, thus prohibiting them from attending Sunday School or Sunday worship services in the traditional manner

. Gatherings were scheduled for Saturday (Sabbath Service), Sunday (Evening Worship), and Monday (Bible Study) nights, after 6pm CST. Tabor Church partnered with the Neighborhood Outreach Ministry at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in west Memphis, TN (Fountain Court Neighborhood). Tabor Church began a new partnership with Mt. Olive Pentecostal Church in south-central Memphis (Oakhaven Neighborhood). The partnership is still in its infant stage, but we believe that God's hand is upon it.

Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by the food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night.

Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing attempted to create police reform, but it did not address the need for strong deterrents to police brutality and hate crimes. Even in locations, like Stockton, CA where the provisions were put in place, it was and is too easy for cops to ignore. These were also just too many bullet points in the proposal.

We’re working to promote something simpler, but the uninformed, uninvolved, and the oppressors are hijacking the conversation at every level of legislative and executive government. More help is still needed. Please understand that the petition merely allows us to get a foot in the door and start a conversation, but politics in America is about money, favors, and back-room deals. It’s not inherently altruistic.

If you haven’t signed the petition, please do so. Please bring these ideas forward in conversations around police reform. I don’t care about credit. The goal is to create deterrents to police violence against civilians, by creating a universal system for oversight and accountability, making crimes against communities of color hate crimes that carry a minimum sentence, and by increasing the screening requirements for officers to prevent members of hate groups from becoming officers in the first place and terminating those who are discovered to be members of hate groups.

I know that you all want to see change and work toward meaningful and sustainable legislation to eliminate racially motivated attacks on civilians. If you would be so kind, please review and if you agree, sign the attached petition that is going out to the President, all Senate and Congressional leaders, and the governors of each of the 50 U.S. states.

The petition targets three pieces of legislation.

1. Independent Investigation Act: Consistent, uniform, transparent and independent investigation into police officers involved in the death of unarmed civilians
2. Hate Crimes Act: Crimes by police directed at minorities be considered hate crimes and carry a minimum sentence
3. Conflict of Interest in Policing Act: No member, meeting or rally attendee, booster or funding party to a hate group will be offered employment as a police officer, and any officer involved in such activities is to be immediately terminated without pay

Thank you for supporting these efforts.

Subject: Today's Word

Today’s Scripture

“...Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom...”
(2 Corinthians 3:17, NIV)

Live in Freedom

If you’re always thinking about something negative that happened yesterday, last month, last year, there’s no freedom there. That’s where the Spirit of the Lord was. This is a new day. Quit living in what was and come over into what is. Right now there is freedom, joy, peace, and restoration for you. Right now there are new beginnings. Remaining upset and offended about what happened yesterday doesn’t bring freedom. Living in regret of what you should have done or what could have been doesn’t do anything productive. It’s time to drop it and move forward. You may be a product of your past, but you don’t have to be a prisoner of your past. God already knew every hurt, every loss, and every mistake you would go through. The good news is that for every setback, He’s already arranged a comeback; for every disappointment, a new beginning; for every failure, restoration; for all the ashes, He has beauty. Live in freedom.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that Your Spirit is working in my life and bringing me into freedom. Thank You that I can make a clear break with the past and enter into new beginnings. I declare that I am leaving behind what was and coming over into what is. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
