A word of encouragement for small churches and small church leaders ….
I read an article this morning that reminded me again of the power and importance of smaller churches. I have many friends who serve in large churches and I praise God for them! In fact, the church where I serve would now be considered a large church. However, the reality is that around 90% of churches are less than 200 people and around 70% are less than 100. And while there are small churches that are unhealthy and need real turnaround (the same is true for many large churches by the way), it is important to name the fact that small churches (or “normative” sized churches) are not “failed big churches.” They are faithful churches with real, God-given strengths that God delights to use. Let me just name a handful of real strengths that mark MANY of these churches and why becoming a member at one could be a great option for you and your family…
Deep relationships – People don’t just attend…they’re known, noticed, and cared for. When someone is hurting or missing, it matters.
Personal shepherding – Pastors and leaders know names, stories, and struggles, allowing care and discipleship to be truly relational and personal.
Flexibility and agility – The simplicity of structure and systems often allows small churches to respond quickly to needs and opportunities the Lord puts in front of them.
High ownership and participation – There are fewer spectators and more people in the game. They are involved. Every person matters, and everyone plays a role in the life of the church.
Authentic worship and prayer – It may be simple, but it’s sincere. Worship is heartfelt, and prayer is often experienced together as a whole church body in a unique and powerful way.
Intergenerational relationships – Kids, parents, and seniors worship together, share life, and pass on faith across generations in natural ways.
Faithfulness over the long haul – Small churches often model steady obedience, perseverance, and long-term commitment in the same place and with the same people.
Strong community presence – Many small churches are deeply rooted in their communities and trusted by neighbors, schools, and local leaders.
Potential for multiplication – Healthy small churches can send people, support church plants, and have a kingdom impact far beyond their size.
Let me just say this…if you’re serving in a small church, be encouraged. You’re not insignificant. You’re exactly where God loves to work! Thank you for your faithfulness in loving God, loving people, and making disciples!
May we always praise the Lord for faithful churches of all shapes and sizes.
