Lenten Scripture Readings

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the troublesome; But his will is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by streams of waters, that produces its fruit in its season; And his leaf shall not wither, And whatever he does shall prosper. Not so are the ungodly, but they are like the dust the wind drives from the face of the earth. Therefore the ungodly shall not rise in the judgment, Nor sinners in the counsel of the righteous; For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

First Week
Genesis 2:15-17 & 3:1-7

Devine Revelation and private interpretation are not the same

The Creator of all things is to big to be contained by anything. In this we agree with the thought of W. Somerset Maugham that “a god that can be understood is no god”. The human mind, regardless of however capable, is yet still finite, and unable to fully comprehend that which is infinite. This is in fact true of all things created. As the scripture teaches us “But who is able to build Him a temple, since heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him? Who am I then, that I should build Him a temple, except to burn sacrifice before Him?” (2 Chronicles 2:6).

Nevertheless, God desires to have a relationship with His creation. In establishing this relationship, it is The Lord Himself that calls mankind back to a knowledge of Him. He has revealed to all humanity, certain aspects of Himself for the benefit of all. St. Paul the Apostle teaches us this. He states that “Since the creation of the world His (God’s) invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead…”(Romans 1:20). This revelatory knowledge of God can only be attained however with a heart knowledge (Gk: ginosko) of The Lord, and not merely an intellectual learning (Gk: episteme).

This is the beginning of our personal salvation: that we might come to the knowledge of Christ who is the Emanuel (God Tabernacled with us). Knowledge not just with the intellectual capacity of our minds, but with the deeper understanding of our hearts that cannot necessarily be put into words. For Christ Himself has warned us of some who call Him Lord, that He “will say to some in that day, depart from me you workers of iniquity, for I never knew you.” Those will be they who know the phonetics of His Name, but don’t know Him. Let us pray and endeavor therefore, that our minds be conformed, and our hearts be connected to that of Jesus Christ our Lord. For in Him, and Him only is our hope for salvation.

What things does Satan have you so distracted with that you can’t focus on God?

A person cannot earn their way into heaven by good works. Nor can they think their way in through belief alone. The two must come together in harmony with one another. This is what faith is, and this is what prepares the human heart for the grace of God through The Lord Jesus Christ that we receive by The All-Holy, Good, and Life Giving Spirit.

“But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” ~ Romans 10:8-10

The fervent prayer of one is more powerful than the frivolous prayers of many

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

~ St. Paul the Apostle

“These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory.”

~ St. Paul the Apostle

In the Ancient Faith we have what called a sacramental theology. That mean we do not divorce the physical and spiritual realities of a thing. For example, in Baptism the water, fire, and grave are one; in Chrismation and Holy Unction the oil and The Holy Spirit are one. Where is this in the Bible? It is shown plainly in The Word. For when The Son of God became man, His flesh and Divinity were one. The physical elements of a sacrament are not merely symbols as in Protestant churches, nor is the spiritual reality imaginary.
