"We have no king but Caesar." John 19:15
Some of the leading priests were asked by Pilate if they wanted him to crucify their king. They gave the correct answer, the answer that was necessary if they would avoid crucifixion themselves. Of course, Pilate would crucify anyone who claimed to be king of the Jews or who, as Jesus, would attract those who wanted him to be king. Because kings were appointed by the Romans, controlled by the Romans and in service to the Roman empire.
Do we look for a king? Do we seek to please those in power? Or do we seek to follow the one who would call us his friends, who walks beside us, but who asks us to take the risks of opposing hate in this world. Do we follow the one who brings us more than any earthly goods? Do we follow Jesus, who brings us salvation?
