"We have no king but Caesar." John 19:15

Some of the leading priests were asked by Pilate if they wanted him to crucify their king. They gave the correct answer, the answer that was necessary if they would avoid crucifixion themselves. Of course, Pilate would crucify anyone who claimed to be king of the Jews or who, as Jesus, would attract those who wanted him to be king. Because kings were appointed by the Romans, controlled by the Romans and in service to the Roman empire.

Do we look for a king? Do we seek to please those in power? Or do we seek to follow the one who would call us his friends, who walks beside us, but who asks us to take the risks of opposing hate in this world. Do we follow the one who brings us more than any earthly goods? Do we follow Jesus, who brings us salvation?

"I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth." John 18:37

Jesus before Pilate answers his question "Are you a king?" And Pilate answers, "What is truth?" What Jesus brings to the world is something that Pilate cannot understand, because his culture is focused on dominating others. But the truth that Jesus brings is a greater message than anything the Romans can conquer.

"So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up." John 18:12

We are looking back on the events of Holy Week. We will hear some of the last words of Jesus before the crucifixion, and discuss the events leading to his death.

Please join us as we spend more time on this important part of the story, even as we continue to celebrate the Resurrection.

"This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you." John 15:12

Last week was Holy Week. We continue now with the season of Easter. A lot happened in the first Holy Week, but we often read the scriptures, but don't stop and think about them. We will go back and look at the events of that week, at the things Jesus said, and the things others did, and talk about them some more. Because at the end, Jesus said the most important things he wanted us to know.

GOOD FRIDAY

"When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left."

Good Friday is the day the powers of darkness thought they had won. Jesus was crucified by the Romans because a message of loving our neighbors was gathering larger and larger crowds and that message is always a threat to those who would control through violence. They hoped to intimidate all the people of Israel into submission and silence the words of God.

But it's not the end of the story...
