Carmelite martyr St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) holds a special place in my heart, and I feel a profound connection to her. As a seminarian in the late 1990s, I rented a VHS tape from the Dedham Daughters of St. Paul store to watch with my parents one evening. The film I chose was a biopic of Edith Stein. Upon arriving at my parents' home, I inquired about their old Ford Tempo, which they had been trying to sell. My mother mentioned that her friend Bill knew a Melkite priest, Fr. McCarthy, who wanted the car for his daughter, who had experienced a miraculous healing accepted by Rome as the second miracle for Edith Stein’s canonization. At that moment, I hadn’t yet mentioned to my mother that the movie I brought was about Edith Stein. Hearing this news, I was struck with awe and wonder. I am convinced that such moments are not mere coincidences and consider Edith Stein a beloved and reliable friend who regularly intercedes on my behalf. Today, I ask her to intercede for our new parish community, Our Lady of Mount Carmel American National Catholic Church, that we might grow in courage and strength as we live our own Imago Dei. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, pray for us!
