Let us pray…

Please join us in praying for the people of Nepal following catastrophic flash floods.

On 26 August, collapsing glacial ice and rock near the Nepal-China border unleashed a torrent of water, mud and debris through Himalayan valleys. Communities in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts are among the worst affected. Hundreds of people have died, many hundreds remain missing and homes, roads, bridges and places of worship have been destroyed or damaged. Rescue work continues amid the risk of further flooding.

The Anglican Church in Nepal has asked for urgent prayer, following reports that pastors and members of local churches are among those who have died or remain missing. Several churches have also been damaged.

Please pray for all those still unaccounted for, those who are grieving and families in urgent need of shelter, food, clean water and medicine. Pray also for pastors and church leaders serving devastated communities, and for all those leading rescue and relief efforts.

God of compassion,
draw near to the people of Nepal.
Comfort those who mourn,
protect those who remain in danger,
strengthen those searching for the missing
and sustain all who are serving their neighbours.
Bring help, healing and hope to every affected community.
Amen.

We give thanks for all nurses…

Today is the Feast Day of Florence Nightingale, who was instrumental in nursing becoming a profession, among myriad other contributions to medicine. Nicknamed the "Lady with the Lamp" for her visits to sick soldiers during the Crimean War, she felt called by God at age 16, when she wrote: "On 7th February 1837, God spoke to me and called me to His Service." In her name, we give thanks to God for all nurses and their vital work.

We give thanks this Fourth of July…

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of our country, I give thanks for the ideals of our nation, especially those expressed in the Declaration of Independence: “that all [people] are created equal.” We have much to celebrate, reflecting on our country’s long journey toward a more perfect union. A clear-eyed view will also remind us, even in the midst of our celebration, to remember the chapters of our nation’s history when we have neglected and abused most especially the vulnerable, falling short of these ideals.

Faith has played a powerful role in shaping our country, and ours compels us to engage actively in building a society that is just and that honors, protects, and defends the dignity of every human being. That is our duty – as Americans and as Christians in the Episcopal tradition. In the Collect for Independence Day from our Book of Common Prayer, we pray:

Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Today is the feast of the Ascension…

Today is Ascension Day, when the Church celebrates the risen Christ returning to the Father.

In the Gospel, Jesus blesses his disciples and is taken from their sight. This is not an ending, but a new beginning. Christ’s ascension affirms his authority and points to his continuing presence, as the disciples are sent out with joy to bear witness to what they have seen.

Ascension Day reminds us that Christ reigns with God and calls us to live as his witnesses in the world.

Scripture reading: Luke 24:50–51, 52–53

‘Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.

And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.’

Prayer

Risen and ascended Lord,
you reign in glory and fill all things with your presence.
Lift our hearts to where you are,
and strengthen us to bear witness to your love.
Send us out in joy and faith,
to serve you in the world you came to save.

Our prayers are with all affected by gun violence.

The alleged gunman was identified as a Boston man. He allegedly used an assault-style rifle to shoot randomly, sending drivers fleeing from their cars.
