The church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. That's the image Bishop Phil LaBelle brought to St. Thomas this Sunday. Jesus didn't call the put-together people. He called Matthew — a tax collector everyone despised — and then went to his house for dinner. The religious critics were scandalized. Jesus's response: "It's not the well who need a physician, but the sick."

On Youth Sunday, our children and youth shared stories of God as friend, comforter, strength, beauty, forgiveness, and love. They asked honest questions. They prayed for peace. They reminded us that wonder is not something to outgrow.

Sometimes the Church’s role is not to teach, but to listen.

This Youth Sunday, the children and youth of St. Thomas offered a remarkable gift to the congregation.

Through stories, questions, prayers, and reflections, they shared how they experience God in their lives. Their words revealed compassion for those who are hungry, unhoused, suffering from war, or caring for creation. They spoke honestly about uncertainty, hope, friendship, beauty, and trust.

One of the themes that emerged again and again was that faith and questions belong together. Our young people reminded us that wonder is not a problem to be solved but a doorway into a deeper relationship with God.

We are grateful for their courage, wisdom, and leadership, and for the reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to speak through every generation.

What can we learn when we stop talking and start listening to our y...

This Sunday promises to be a joyful and busy one at St. Thomas. As we celebrate Trinity Sunday and Youth Sunday, we'll gather around breakfast tables, continue important conversations about our future, learn together, sign up to serve our neighbors, and honor the leadership and faith of our young people.

With so much happening throughout the morning, we encourage you to engage in the opportunities that speak most strongly to you. To make it easier for parishioners to participate in multiple offerings, the Rector Housing Forum will be offered twice—at 9am and again after the 10am service—allowing those who wish to attend the final On Christianity session with Dr. Phil Ballinger following the 10am service to do so.

Whether you're worshipping, learning, serving, connecting with friends over coffee, or celebrating our youth, thank you for helping make St. Thomas the vibrant community it is!

Where is Christ now?

That question sat at the center of Canon Ivar Hillesland’s sermon this Sunday as he reflected on Ascension and Jesus’ farewell discourse in John’s Gospel. Rather than imagining God as distant, he invited us to see Christ present in all of creation—and still meeting us week after week at the communion table.

Through four images of how we hold our hands to receive communion—a throne, a cross, a beggar, and a manger—we were reminded that faith calls us to reverence, honesty, dependence, and love.

What does Ascension actually mean—and where is Jesus now? Preaching at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, The Rev. Canon Ivar Hillesland explores Jesus’ farewell discourse in the Gospel of John and reframes Ascension as an invitation into deeper connection with Christ, not distance from him. Through f...
