A Death Sermon for Big Egos. In Mark 9:30-37, Jesus is walking to the cross while His disciples argue over who is greatest. That sounds painfully familiar. Christ calls us to humility and service, yet we still want to be noticed, thanked, praised, and treated as important. We turn service into a quiet campaign for recognition and call our ego “just wanting to be appreciated.” But Jesus doesn’t only expose our self-crowning hearts. He saves them. The King took last place, died for proud sinners, and rose to make us new. So repent. Stop fighting for the seat. Serve the lowly. Do the quiet work. Follow the Savior who became last for you.

In this passage, Jesus confronts prayerless self-reliance, receives weak and honest faith, and proves that His power is never the uncertain thing. This message calls us to bring our helplessness, our unbelief, our children, and our sins to Christ, because only His hand can save, sustain, strengthen weak faith, and conquer unbelief

The Right Verses, The Wrong Expectations. Yesterday, we looked at Mark 9:9-13 and considered how the disciples had the right verses, but the wrong expectations. They knew resurrection, restoration, and Elijah belonged in God’s plan, but they didn’t yet understand how God would fulfill them. Resurrection would come through death. Restoration would come through suffering. Elijah had come, but not the way they expected.

We were reminded that God often restores with a crowbar. He opens the wall and exposes what we’d rather keep hidden: our false expectations, protected sins, fake peace, cowardice, rebellion, pride, and self-deception. At first, that exposure feels like damage. But it is mercy when Christ intends to rebuild the house.

John could expose the rot, but he could not atone for it. That is why he pointed to Christ and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Christ alone takes away sin. The hand holding the crowbar is pierced

The Ultimate Test. We heard from Pastor Tim Pasma on Genesis 22:1-19. We were reminded that God does test His people. Sometimes those tests are extraordinary, but most of them come through the ordinary pressures of life. And often, they don’t make sense to us. How do we reconcile Jesus’ promise of abundant life with the pain of difficult tests? Genesis 22 teaches us that the abundant life is not a life free from testing, but a life of trusting the Lord through testing. When the test is confusing, painful, or costly, we are called to trust God anyway, knowing that He is faithful, wise, and good.

Only Jesus Remains. We heard from Mark 9:2-8, where Jesus reveals His glory to Peter, James, and John. Before they would see His shame, they saw His splendor. But Peter wanted to build tents and preserve the moment, while the Father interrupted and said, “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him.” The glory wasn’t mainly about the mountain, the experience, or even Moses and Elijah. The glory belongs to Christ alone. And that’s convicting because we know our instinct. We want the mountain without the valley. We often want God’s gifts to stay undisturbed instead of following Christ into pain, suffering, and obedience. But the good news is that Jesus didn’t stay on the mountain. He came down into shame, suffering, and the cross to save sinners and bring us to God. And now He calls us to follow Him into shame, suffering, and cross-bearing, not to save ourselves, but because He has already saved us. So let's see His glory. Drop the tents. And hear the Son. Because only Jesus remains

“Preference and Providence.” We enjoyed having James visit and preach for us. We walked through the whole book of Habakkuk, tracing the prophet’s honest cry before God, God’s surprising answer, and the call to trust the Lord’s providence even when His will conflicts with our preferences. Habakkuk reminds us that God sees evil, that no sin will go unpunished, and that our hope is ultimately found in Christ, who paid the debt for all who trust in Him. The book ends with a call to faithful rejoicing: even when circumstances do not change, the Lord remains our strength and salvation.

“When Saving Your Life Destroys It.” Mark 8:34–9:1 shows how Jesus calls His disciples to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. In this passage, Christ exposes the deadly instinct of self-preservation, warns us that the whole world is a terrible trade for the soul, and teaches us that the way of His kingdom is death before life, suffering before glory, and the cross before the crown. This message calls us to stop protecting the old life Christ came to crucify, to put sin to death by the Spirit, and to follow the crucified King who has been vindicated in power. Confessing Christ, Resisting the Cross. Mark 8:27-33 presses on the uncomfortable gap between the Christ we confess with our mouths and the Christ we resist with our lives. Peter got the answer right: “You are the Christ.” But when Jesus revealed that the Christ must suffer, be rejected, killed, and rise again, Peter pushed back. And we do the same. We say Jesus is Lord, but then argue when His lordship touches our pride, comfort, sin, marriage, parenting, bitterness, or control. The good news is that Jesus went to the cross Peter tried to prevent. He died for resisting disciples, rose again, and now mercifully calls us back behind Him to follow.

Blurry Christianity. Mark 8:22-26 tells the story of Jesus healing a blind man in two stages. The miracle itself became an object lesson for the disciples. The man could see, but not clearly, and that is exactly where the disciples were. They had seen Jesus’ power, heard His teaching, walked with Him, and were about to confess Him as Christ, yet their vision was still blurry. We can be the same way. We know Christ, His Word, and the Gospel, yet our vision gets blurry in practice. In the home, we blur submission, love, obedience, and authority into whatever is most convenient. In the heart, we say God is sovereign until the bill comes, the diagnosis comes, or the marriage gets tense. Then worry feels reasonable, bitterness feels justified, and control feels necessary. That is blurry Christianity. So we need Christ to keep touching, teaching, correcting, and clearing our eyes until we see Him more truly. May we not settle for blurry Christianity.

“Mastering Emotions: Living by Faith, Not by Feelings.” We addressed how our feelings are real and powerful, but they must not become lord over truth, duty, Scripture, or faith. In this message, we consider how God designed emotions for good, how sin corrupts and disorders them, and how Christ redeems not only our actions but our affections. We are called to stop making excuses for sinful feelings, to bring our emotions under the lordship of Christ, and to walk by faith in the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us.
