Dear friends,
It’s Christmas Eve and we had plans to gather around the table with family and friends while enjoying a homemade dinner, or plans to travel by train, plane or automobile to meet with far-away relatives. Maybe your plans involved sitting in front of the fireplace with the kiddos sipping on hot cocoa while watching a movie about the nativity, or gathering with your church family to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, lighting the Advent candle and singing the praises of our Lord!
But, for many of us, a wrench called Elliott was thrown into our holiday plans and we find ourselves shut-in, hoping to connect with our loved ones even at a distance. Sounds eerily familiar, right?
Imagine how Mary and Joseph were feeling when they had to travel alone to Bethlehem, perhaps an unfamiliar place to them, when they realize baby Jesus is ready to make His appearance. Joseph, desperate to find a room where Mary and the Christ child could lay their heads, is led to a stable. Stables rarely have beds, heat, food, and never smell pleasant. “Why us?” and “Why here?” they might have wondered. But their sorrow would turn into dancing as their precious baby is born. The Savior arrived and life would never be the same for them. For us.
As we take note of our current circumstances, let us remember how the Savior came into the world and the life He led in order to redeem us. He became poor so that we could become heirs of His riches in glory. He was rejected so that we could be accepted in the Beloved. He became sin so that we could be reconciled to the Father. He died so that we could live.
We may not celebrate Christmas this year like we planned, and I pray that wherever you are, you’re safe and warm. But I encourage you to reflect on why we celebrate Christmas. Jesus, the Light of the World, came because He loves us. God is love, and we know that love never fails. So the Light that came in the form of a baby, reminds us that, when all else fails, He never fails.
Merry Christmas to all!
Your friend,
Liz
