JOIN US FOR END GUN VIOLENCE ADVOCACY DAY!
Join Cease Fire PA and partners in Harrisburg on June 2 to lobby, rally, and send a powerful message to lawmakers: prioritize public safety and pass life-saving gun violence prevention laws.
1,600 Pennsylvanians die from gun violence every year. 3,000 more are injured. This preventable catastrophe is uniquely American and it impacts every Pennsylvanian.

Too many Pennsylvanians live in communities where gun violence is part of the fabric of
daily life. Parents bury their children at alarming rates. Children grow up losing friends before they graduate from high school. The constant shootings mean everyone in the community struggles to thrive. Black and Brown Pennsylvanians experience this danger even more.

While fi****ms are used in a small percentage of su***de attempts, they make up a significant majority of fatalities. The result: fi****ms are responsible for more than 900 su***des every year in Pennsylvania

Mass shootings turn daily activities into moments of terror–and death. This uniquely American experience is teaching a generation to prepare to hide under the desk, need security guards before we pray, and worry about a visit to the grocery store turning violent. We don’t have to live like this

The main factor determining if a victim of domestic violence survives: a firearm. When one is present, the victim is five times more likely to be killed. We’ve started to change that picture by passing legislation in 2018 to disarm identified abusers, but there is more work to do.
We have a gun violence problem created through policy action and inaction.

This year PYM is inviting Quaker Meetings in our region to engage with, discuss, and worship share about their experiences within their Quaker Meetings. What do we experience? What do we see? How do we feel? What are we led to do?

Synopsis
The Quaker Coalition for Uprooting Racism (QCUR) strives to support Quaker communities in addressing patterns of racial wounding and in adopting practices that support patterns of racial justice. In this pamphlet, two members of the QCUR steering committee, Lauren Brownlee and Zenaida Peterson, explore Quaker patterns of conflict avoidance, “guardians of the status quo,” denying oppression exists within Quakerism, performativity, and inattention to right relationship with time. They offer guidance on how to recognize and shift these harmful patterns. Discussion questions are included.
You can read a Friends Journal review of this pamphlet here.

"...“I am accustomed to joining communities where I am the only African-American present,” Billie Wade says. “That’s been a common thread throughout my life. Coming to Quakerism and discovering that that thread was going to continue was not a surprise… Fortunately, Des Moines Valley [Friends Meeting] has been an open, welcoming community to me.”

“That said,” she continues, “I still feel lonely sometimes.”

Although Friends are willing to talk about unrest in places like Ukraine or Iran, Billie explains, they are often reluctant to have similar discussions about the rejection Black people experience from within the Quaker community. “I can’t be the person that brings up those conversations all the time,” she says. “It gets to a point where people see me coming and they will begin to resent that.”
