There’s a lot to be excited about at St. Mary Magdalen!
This summer brought exciting improvements across our parish and school campus, including a newly renovated gymnasium, a new playground, and additional space to accommodate our growing school community.
Principal Amy Bauer and Advancement Director John Gill share how these improvements reflect the continued growth and strength of St. Mary Magdalen School, recently recognized once again as an Archdiocesan School of Distinction.
We’re also delighted to welcome our new pastor, Fr. Ken Cavara, as we begin this next chapter together.
With a thriving school, dedicated faculty and staff, generous families and parishioners, and a community rooted in Jesus Christ, it’s a great time to be a member of St. Mary Magdalen!

A Rational Explanation: The Mystery at the Heart of Faith

When Jesus calms the storm and walks on water, the Gospel isn't handing us a puzzle to solve — it's showing us who He is. Drawing on childhood memories of 1950s monster movies (where authorities always insisted "there has to be a logical explanation," even with a giant spider staring them down), this homily explores how the same instinct creeps into faith: the urge to rationalize away the Incarnation, the miracles, the mystery of God Himself.
From Elijah encountering God not in the wind, earthquake, or fire — but in a quiet whisper at Horeb — to Peter sinking the moment he takes his eyes off Jesus, this homily is about learning to trust a God who acts on His own terms, not ours.

Truly God, Truly Man | Grief Became a Miracle

On the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, our readings turn to the theme of God's abundant provision for a people who must choose to heed Him.
In Isaiah 55:1-3, the prophet speaks to the Israelites exiled in Babylon after decades of turning away from the Lord. Now God extends a fresh invitation, without cost, without condition: "Why spend your money for what is not bread, your wages for what fails to satisfy?" It's an invitation to be intentional, to return to the covenant relationship God promised through David.
The Gospel, Matthew 14:13-21, gives us the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. But before the miracle, we see Jesus's humanity: grieving the death of his cousin, John the Baptist, he withdraws to be alone. Yet when the crowds follow him, his heart is moved with pity. He heals the sick, and as evening falls, he takes five loaves and two fish and feeds thousands, a moment that foreshadows the Eucharist we still receive today.

Dark at the Tomb | Finding Hope Before the Dawn

On the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, we reflect on why her witness has moved Christians for two thousand years. She stood at the foot of the cross when the other disciples scattered. She watched as Joseph of Arimathea laid the Lord's body in the tomb. And she was the first to arrive at that tomb, while it was still dark, in search of Him.
Her story reminds us that there is no sin too great and no wound too deep for the mercy of Christ to reach. Afflicted with seven demons, she became the one entrusted with the greatest news in human history: "He is risen." When Jesus speaks her name at the tomb, one word transforms her grief into joy and sends her forth as the Apostle to the Apostles.
May her example inspire us to remain faithful in the dark hours, trusting that resurrection light is always on its way.

Why God Lets Weeds Grow | The Parable of Patience

The Parable of the Weeds and Wheat (Matthew 13), opening with the story of Theodore Roosevelt's devastating loss of his wife and mother on the same day — and the expectations we all carry, whether of a $450 million library, a new pastor, or the people we love. Drawing on this parable, the homily explores why Christ allows good and evil to grow side by side in the world, why patience is one of our greatest struggles, and why we must never give up praying for loved ones who have strayed from the faith — trusting, like the saints before them, in God's mercy and timing. Closes with St. Paul's reminder that God's plans for those who love him "far exceed any of our expectation."

Scandals Never Break God's Word | Is Your Faith Built on a Person or on God?

Church scandals feel like a modern crisis, but they're as old as the Church itself — even Judas, chosen personally by Jesus, betrayed him. In this homily, the priest confronts a question many believers avoid: is my faith rooted in the Church's ministers, or in God himself? Drawing on Abraham's deception, King David's adultery and murder, and Peter's denial of Christ, he shows that Scripture never hides the failures of God's chosen messengers — yet God's word, as the prophet Isaiah promises, always accomplishes the purpose for which it was sent.
The homily turns to Jesus's Parable of the Sower to explain a core Catholic teaching often lost since the Reformation: God's grace is all-powerful, but it still calls for a free, cooperative human response — the "good soil" that lets the seed take root. Quoting St. Augustine ("God who created you without your cooperation will not redeem and save you without your cooperation"), the priest points to the one person who gave that response perfectly and without sin: Mary. Her fiat at the Annunciation and her instruction at Cana — "Do whatever he tells you" — become the model every believer, and every flawed member of the Church, is invited to imitate.

Come to Me, All You Weary | Rest Your Soul in the Lord

A new pastor's first Sunday homily at St. Mary Magdalene, reflecting on Matthew 11:28 — "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." Drawing on St. Alphonsus Liguori and St. Thomas Aquinas, the homily explores how Christ's promise of rest goes beyond physical relief from a busy world to the deeper rest of the soul in union with God. Includes a personal story of witnessing childlike faith at a niece's first Mass, and a reflection on the Eucharistic procession taking place that day in Philadelphia.
