What does it look like when the God of the universe makes himself completely available to the broken, the overlooked, and even the self-righteous? In Luke 7:36-50, we find ourselves at an unlikely dinner party where a notorious woman crashes a Pharisee’s gathering and does something scandalous and beautiful all at once. She weeps at Jesus’ feet, wipes them with her hair, and anoints them with expensive perfume. The room is uncomfortable. The host is silently seething. But Jesus sees everything differently than everyone else in that courtyard. This passage pulls back the curtain on the heart of God and shows us that he does not wait for us to clean ourselves up before he welcomes us. He receives broken people as they are. We all came to him in some form of brokenness, whether we recognized it like the woman or were blind to it like Simon the Pharisee. The invitation here is deeply personal. No matter where we are in our faith journey, this story reminds us that drawing near to Jesus, even imperfectly and with tears, is always met with compassion, forgiveness, and peace…
