Chestnut Hill Cemetery

Chestnut Hill Cemetery Founded in 1862 by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Chestnut Hill Cemetery is one of the Mechanicsburg area's most historic landmarks.

The cemetery today continues a tradition of service to families 150 years after its founding. Sitting atop a hill that overlooks a scenic vista, the cemetery is surrounded by mature tree growth and is a place of peaceful reflection.

Yesterday and today were spent marking the graves of Civil War Veterans. 40 plus are buried at Chestnut Hill, likely more considering not all stones include references to veterans' contributions.

Among these Civil War veterans is a survivor of the Battle of the Wilderness who returned to combat after being wounded. Chestnut Hill is also the final resting place of a military surgeon who was killed by guerillas at Harper's Ferry.

The stories of these honored Civil War Veterans will be told this summer during a local Civil War tour. Details to follow.
