Pleasing Him

2 Timothy 2:3-5
“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.”

As a Christian, and especially a Christian who is also a preacher, I think it is easy to get misplaced in mind about who we are seeking to please. The preacher must ask himself, who am I trying to please? The Christian must ask his or herself why do I do what I do for the Lord? There is much to consider.
We must be careful that we do not allow ourselves to get entangled with the affairs of this life. At the Judgment Seat of Christ every Christian is going to find out what really mattered. I am sure that every Christian will find out in that day that some of the things we allowed ourselves to get caught up in, did not mean a thing to God. And that goes also for every preacher and his preferences. We preachers will find out that some of what we did, we did because we wanted to please and impress the brethren.
We must also see that we strive in the work for our Lord lawfully. There is a right way to do things for Him who has chosen us. The right is His way and the only way He will accept our work for Him. It is going to be sad at the Judgement Seat of Christ to see some of our works not accepted by Him because we sought to take a different route. David was reminded with great pain that there is only one way God would accept the Ark of the Covenant to be moved. A man died because David took a short cut. May we learn from David’s actions.
How well do you desire to please God?

The Purging

John 15:1-2
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit… I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing… Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.”

It is the will of our Heavenly Father that every Christian bear much fruit. In our verses Jesus tells us that bearing much fruit glorifies our Father. Each year an orchardist will purge his trees in order that they may grow better, larger fruit. The goal in purging fruit trees is not quantity but better quality. Likewise, this is the goal of our Heavenly Father, so He puts the Christian through a purging. The word “purgeth” means to cleanse, to prune the useless shoots away. Is there anything in your life that God is seeking to remove, to purge away, so that you may bear much (better) fruit? May we, by faith totally yield ourselves to His care for us so that we may bear better fruit for His glory.

This Way

Acts 9:1-2
“And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.”

Note the phrase “this way”.
Saul who later God would change his name to Paul was using the phrase “this way” to describe Christians. He did it again in Acts 22:4 in declaring his testimony before the brethren of the church he testified that he “persecuted this way unto the death…”.

If an old Christ denying, persecutor of the church like Saul of Tarsus were alive today and looking for those who were followers of Jesus would he find you living in “this way”?
What does it mean to be “this way”?
Are you “this way” only on Sundays or is “this way” the way you live everyday?
Do you live “this way” just when it is convenient and works to your advantage?
Do others know that you are of “this way”?

“This way” is not my way it is the Jesus way. It is a way of life that without question identifies one with Jesus Christ. For many back in the time of Acts chapter 9 being “this way” meant you could be captured and imprisoned, tortured, beaten or killed. Today what does being “this way” lead you to? In some countries it can lead to persecution and maybe death. What does it mean to be of “this way” while living in a country like America?

The Bookends For This Life

2 Corinthians 5:6-8
“Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

2 Corinthians 5:7 is a parenthetical verse, which means it begins and ends with a set of parentheses. It is like two bookends of a truth inserted to better explain the context of the text. In grammar it can be removed and not altar the main point of the text or the sentence. Currently as Christians we are in this world. We live here and are a part of this world, but this world is not our home. Our home is heaven. For the Christian, home is absent from the body or this earthly tabernacle, and present with the Lord Jesus Christ. How do we live in this present world with Heaven in view? We walk by faith, and not by sight. Our faith in God gives us confidence for living in this world and confidence that we will one day enter Heaven and be with our Lord. This confidence gives the Christian great comfort while we walk through this world. Jesus said, He was gone away to prepare for us a place, “that where I am, there ye may be also”.
We walk by faith, seeing that place Jesus has prepared for us to be with Him.
Do not allow the sights we see in this world to be a distraction to our faith allowing us to see Heaven.

For Christ Sake

Matthew 10:38-39
“And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.”

Picking up from yesterday’s devotion, I find another truth that taking up one’s cross speaks of. The cross was an instrument of death. Therefore the cross speaks of those things in your life that you go through because you are a Christian, that God can use to help you to die to your self. The great hindrance in me being all I can be for God is me. I am my greatest hindrance. I need to get out of the way in order to be the Christian God desires for me to be. Christ calls this process loosing your life for His sake.

Why was I born?
What is my purpose in life?
Why did Christ save me?
Why did He give me a place in His church?

The full answer to these questions become very clear when self is taken out of the way. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:31 “I die daily.” The Christian life is to be a replica of Christ and His servanthood . Jesus said in Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
In Philippians 2:7 we find that Christ “made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant”.
No Christian can be a Christ-like servant until he or she first dies to self. We must lose our own self in order to truly find the will of God for Christ sake.

Because You Are A Christian

Matthew 10:38
“And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.”

Through the years I have heard various comments about one taking up their cross. One having a flat tire or a headache and other ailment or such mishaps is not taking up one’s cross. Those sort of things can happen to anyone. Taking up one’s cross speaks of the things one goes through, or faces all because they are a Christian. Your cross speaks of the troubles you go through because you are a Christian.

In the context of our text Jesus spoke of the Christian who is at variance with those in his own family (Matthew 10:35). The word variance means to cut into two separate parts. At times the Christian may find himself or herself at odds with people they love dearly. Matthew 10:34 has always been a tough verse to rest my faith on. In this verse Christ said, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” That sword is a sword of variance. There are certain truths found in the Bible that leaves no room for any compromise. The truth or doctrine is presented in one way and leaves the Christian no room to agreeably disagree. Standing on such truths can bring about a separation between two people. As a Christian when you find yourself in such separations, at variance with others, make sure it is because of your position in Scripture and not your disposition in attitude. Remain strong in your faith in God’s Word but remain sweet in your stand. If you and I as Christians must suffer, may it be for our position with Christ and not our disposition within self.

When Nothing Seems To Work

Psalms 78:32
“For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.”

Psalm 78 is like an abbreviated history lesson of some of God’s dealings with Israel. Verse 32 is a sad commentary on those dealings because it reminds us that for some of them God’s chastisement did not seem to do them any good. No matter how God dealt with them, “they sinned still”. Even when God dealt with them in His wondrous works of kindness and goodness they “believed not”.

It is heartbreaking and sad to watch someone turn away from the goodness of God and continue on in their sin. I find written in the Bible that God uses two things that leads someone to repentance and faith in God. He uses Godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10) and His own goodness (Romans 2:4). If these two things do not bring a person to repentance of their sin and lead them to faith in God nothing will. Allow me to challenge you. Go back in your memory and recall God’s dealings in your life.
Did any of those dealings bring Godly sorrow into your heart?
Did any of His dealings with you show you the goodness of God?
What leads you to repent of your sins and exercise faith in God?
