Greetings! Life has been incredibly busy and challenging for so many of us the past couple of months we have had little activity on our site.

Here’s our latest update, however, and we look forward to resuming our Friday night gatherings after Great Lent.

Following Great and Holy Pascha, Father Steve will resume our McMinnville Orthodox Christian Fellowship (MOCF) gatherings. Please reserve these dates on your calendar:

Friday of Bright Week, April 17, at 6PM, we will have a Festal (fast free) Potluck and Fellowship (no book study this evening).

Our regular MOCF, including Reader Vespers and Book Study, is scheduled for Friday, May 1 and May 15, at 6 PM.
Our regular monthly MOCF gatherings will continue on the first and third Fridays.

From this week’s bulletin at Holy Resurrection:

Since the chief weapon for virtue is humility, and the greatest hindrance to it is pride, the divine Fathers have set these three weeks before the Forty-day Fast as a preparation for the spiritual struggles of virtue.

This present week they have called Harbinger, since it declares that the Fast is approaching; and they set humility as the foundation for all our spiritual labors by appointing that the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee be read today, even before the Fast begins, to teach, through the vaunting of the Pharisee, that the foul smoke of self-esteem and the stench of boasting drives away the grace of the Spirit, strips man of all his virtue, and casts him into the pits of Hades; and, through the repentance and contrite prayer of the Publican, that humility confers upon the sinner forgiveness of all his wicked deeds and raises him up to the greatest heights.

A parishioner stopped going to church. Time passed, and one day the parish priest decided to visit him.

The entrance door was open and the priest went inside. The man was sitting all alone by the fireplace. He saw the priest, nodded his head in greeting and motioned to him to sit down.

The priest settled comfortably into the armchair, and also began to look at the flame beautifully playing in the fireplace.

Both were silent.

A few minutes later, the priest got up, took the fireplace tongs, grabbed a burning brand with them and put it aside, away from the fire. Then he sat down again.

The silence continued.

The brand meanwhile ceased to blaze, then completely cooled down and turned black. The priest got up again, took the tongs and put the black brand back into the fire. A moment later, it was already burning like the others.

The priest put aside the tongs, and without saying a word headed for the exit. When he was already at the door, he heard the words: “Thank you for the visit, and for your sermon by the fireplace. This Sunday I will definitely come to the service.”

We had a wonderful meeting last night with more than usual people, great worship, incredible conversation while reading more from “Thinking Orthodox”, plenty of laughter and great snacks! Fr. Steve valiantly led the charge.

We miss seeing some of you there and pray all is well.

Tomorrow at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church over in Salem we eagerly await witnessing the baptism/illumination of four of our dear friends! Praise God!

May our gracious God bless you…
