An initiative called “Black Out Sunday” has been organized by African American North Texas Pastors to promote and support early voting. This initiative is a faith-led, nonpartisan call to action — uniting thousands of churches in Texas to equip and encourage their members to participate fully in the democratic process of voting, particularly early voting. This year’s midterm elections push is fueled by concerns over voter suppression, economic challenges, the future of our children and grandchildren, and the political stakes of the midterms, will determine control of the U.S. House and Senate and the direction of this country and state. “Black Out Sunday” IS NOT about telling people who to vote for, but rather, it serves to remind every registered voter to “use their voice in democracy by voting.” This initiative is being launched by the African American Pastors Coalition of North Texas, who are inviting thousands of churches statewide to participate in a coordinated voter mobilization on Sunday, October 25, 2026. On this day, after the worship and the Word service concludes, all eligible and registered voters are being asked to go vote on Sunday, October 25th at a polling location closest to their residence. “Black Out Sunday” is modeled somewhat like “Black Friday” — a day of preparation and action — but with a focus on civic engagement rather than shopping. According to Rev. Richie Butler, president-elect of the coalition and senior pastor at St. Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas, the goal is to “prepare just as seriously for something far more consequential: the future of our families and communities.”
