Tonight Jesus tells us, "Do not be afraid."

The tomb is empty.

Death does not win. Sin does not win. Despair does not win.
Jesus wins.
And because he lives, we live.

Brothers and sisters, this is why the church calls this night the mother of all vigils. Because this night calls every sadness, every mess, every hope that we hold.

Esta noche, Cristo, hermanos, nos dice: no tengan miedo.

El sepulcro está vacío.
La muerte no vence, el pecado no vence, la desesperanza no vence. Cristo vence y porque él vence nosotros vivimos.

El Vía Crucis es memoria, pero también contemplación del rostro doliente del Señor. Al rezarlo, recordamos con amor y agradecimiento lo mucho que Jesús sufrió por salvarnos del pecado. Al recorrer con la Iglesia cada uno de estos misterios dolorosos, sentimos que el dolor es un gran misterio.⁣

Pero la Cruz de Cristo siempre nos enseña a mirar a los demás con misericordia y ternura, especialmente a los que sufren, a los que necesitan ayuda y a quienes necesitan una palabra o una acción concreta._____The Way of the Cross is an act of remembrance, but also a contemplation of the suffering face of the Lord. As we pray it, we recall with love and gratitude how much Jesus suffered to save us from sin. As we journey with the Church through each of these sorrowful mysteries, we sense that suffering is a profound mystery.Yet, the Cross of Christ always teaches us to look upon others with mercy and tenderness—especially those who suffer, those in need of help, and those who need a word or a concrete act of assistance.

The Triduum begins tonight, and we'd love for you to join us! Latin for "three days," this period marks the culmination of the liturgical year, as we celebrate Christ's Passion, Death, and Resurrection. ⁣

Tonight is Holy Thursday, when Jesus instituted the Eucharist and washed his disciples' feet. Tomorrow, we will observe Good Friday, when Jesus gave his life for the world on the cross.And Saturday evening, we will begin our celebration of Jesus's resurrection from the dead, with the Easter Vigil. Of course, there will be Mass on Easter Sunday as well.⁣

At the Last Supper, Jesus instructs his apostles to celebrate the Eucharist, saying "Do this in memory of me" (Luke 22:19-20). But what does it mean to say that the Mass is a memorial? Jewish practices surrounding the Passover provide the key.⁣
⁣
Unlike other memorials that are meant to help us remember something from the past, like a photo or even a reenactment, the Jewish celebration of Israel's liberation from Egypt is meant to make the events of the Passover present in the lives of people today. It is less of a simple remembering of something than it is a participation in it.⁣
⁣
This is the context in which Jesus celebrates the Eucharist -- and in which he says, "Do this in memory of me." So when we celebrate the Eucharist, as we do tonight at Saint Michael the Archangel McKinney, TX, we aren't just remembering something from the past. Rather, we are making Jesus's Passion and its saving power present to us today. ⁣
⁣
En la Última Cena, Jesús instruye a sus apóstoles a celebrar la Eucaristía, diciendo: «Hagan esto en memoria mía» (Lucas 22:19-20). Pero, ¿qué significa decir que la Misa es un memorial? Las prácticas judías en torno a la Pascua nos ofrecen la clave.⁣
