Sometimes I have to remind myself to focus on what I do know rather than be anxious about what I don’t know. I don’t know the condition of the souls of our governmental leaders. I do know that I am directed in scripture to pray for them.
My theology might not always agree with that of a George Whitefield, but I can certainly admire his zeal.
Isaiah 9:7
“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”
I have to ask myself, “Where are all the George Whitefield’s of the faith today?”
Whitefield was once quoted to say, “We can preach the Gospel of Christ no further than we have experienced the power of it in our own hearts.”
Nothing allows us to experience such power as overcoming adversity does. Nobody wields such power alone. Pride and arrogance negate that power and diminish its value. There is a clear distinction between being bold and being brash.
Another George Whitefield quote is this: “What! Get to heaven on your own strength? Why, you might as well try to climb to the moon on a rope of sand!”
We need to gather strength as a nation under God, as a body of believers in Jesus. Hardship, tyranny, dominance and bullying serve to accomplish nothing more than mockery of what faith in Jesus represents. I’m not afraid to state that truth and justice lie in Jesus alone.
Who else has ever proven it?”
From The Battle Hymn of the Republic we read, “He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.”
In another verse it says, “I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal";
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on.”
We need to be as careful in choosing our heroes as we are in choosing our enemies.
Isaiah 59:19
So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
