(Colossians 4:10 & II Tim. 4:11) Here we learn that Paul had changed his mind about John Mark and compliments his ministry.
Peter expressed that John Mark was his son. (II Peter 5:13) Here he refers to him as _______
__ _____. Here he is referring to a spiritual son in the ministry. Probably is a reference, which tells us that Peter had been his mentor. It could be referring to Peter winning John Mark to a faith in Christ.
The Book
Mark is presenting Jesus as the Servant of God. (Mark 10:44-45) Verse forty-five is the ______ verse in the book of Mark. Mark is writing to Roman readers.
The word "straightway" is used ____ times in the book of Mark. It means immediately. Mark pictures Jesus as "the servant of God," who is on the go. As Jesus is going, he is meeting people's needs.
Jesus is still meeting the needs of His people. He supplies our every need. (Phil. 4:19) Those who read the book of Mark are encouraged. The book was written around AD 64-67, at a time when Christians needed encouraged. They were suffering under the rule of Nero, who was a harsh Emperor of Rome.
Mark records about half of Jesus miracles. The healing of a deaf and dumb man (Mark 7:31-37) and the healing of a blind man (Mark 8: 22-26) are recorded only in the book of Mark. Jesus used 18 parables and only two of them are peculiar to Mark's Gospel. (Mark 4:) This parable is called, "The Parable of the Sower". (Mark 13: 34-37) Often called the Parable of the Watch. Mark does not record long speeches or sermons. He pictures Jesus as servant of action. He records exciting accounts surrounding the life of Christ and records more about Jesus emotions that he expressed in his works.
Mark presents the exciting fact of the coming of John the Baptist, who was the forerunner of Jesus. He states John the Baptist is "The _______ of one _________ in the wilderness. "Prepare ye the way of the Lord and make his paths straight." (Mark 1:3)
I. The Announcement. (Mark 1:1-8)

This Study of Mark will not be a verse-by-verse study. We will study as the Lord leads. We have covered many of the events in the book of Matthew that are listed in the book of Mark. We will look into chapter one and we will be giving a Harmony of the Gospels hand out that we will be using to help us put things in proper sequence.
Mark 1:
Introduction: According to Acts 12:12, John Mark lived in Jerusalem with his mother, Mary. Mark was his Surname. A Surname was a name added to the baptismal or Christian name, it often depicted something about the person, and was sometimes used as a name to identify the family or practice of the person.
Mary must have been a devout Christian. According to the Scriptures, "many gathered in her home to pray." This tells us that Mark had been given good directions in his life. Our children need to have this kind of example to follow.
John Mark chose to go with Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey. (Acts 13:5) A famine had been upon the land and the brethren, which dwelt in Judea sent __________ from Antioch to _____________, by the hands of _____________ and _________. (Acts 11: 27-30)
Acts 13:13, tells us John Mark left Barnabas and Paul and returned to _______________. His turning back, later resulted in a _____________ between Barnabas and Paul. (Acts 15: 36-41) However, Paul did make an effort to settle the ______________. (Colossians 4:10 & II Tim. 4:11) Note, Paul expresses in these verses a _____________ about John Mark's ministry.
Peter referred to John Mark as a son. (II Peter 5:13) He calls him "_________ ___ _____".
No doubt, this reference to John Mark being a son is referring to him like a son in the ministry. It could be referring to him as a son because Peter had a hand in John Mark's conversion.
The Book presents Jesus as the Servant of God. (Mark 10: 44-45) Verse 45 is the key verse in the Book of Mark. The word "straightway" is used 41 times in the Book of Mark. Mark does not spend much time on speeches or long sermons. He was a man of action. He begins quickly with Jesus, the Servant of God, on the go. He pictures Jesus meeting the needs of the people everywhere he goes.
Note: Jesus is still meeting the needs of people. He supplies the need of His children. (Phil. 4:19) Reading the book of Mark, was encouragement to the Christian. The book was written about A.D. 64-67. Christians need to be encouraged today as well as in this period of history. At the time of this writing, Nero was Emperor of Rome.
The word Gospel means "good news". The opening remarks to the book of Mark, expresses good news to the believers. Mark presents the exciting fact of the coming of John the Baptist.

of one __________ in the _______________, "make His paths straight".
In the Bible times, when a notable person or people would come to a city, the roads were prepared for the honor of this dignitary. This was to make the journey easier.
Israel was in a "spiritual wilderness" The Son of God was coming. Therefore, God sent John the Baptist to make ready the path. "The Son of God is coming". As Moses led them out of Egyptian bo***ge, and they wandered in the wilderness because of their lack of faith, so Israel is again in the bo***ge of sin. God sends John the Baptist to prepare the way and lead them to a saving knowledge of Jesus, their Messiah. Many of the people believed, but the spiritual leaders refused Him and eventually these spiritual leaders allowed John the Baptist to be killed. Jesus was their salvation but they refused Him. The stone the builders refused has become the chief corner stone.
John was the last of the Old Testament Prophets. He presented the Messiah to the Nation of Israel. (Matthew 11: 1-19)
