GOD, COUNTRY AND COMMUNITY

Good Shepherd is a small Episcopal church in the rural county of Dinwiddie, VA (Post Office is McKenney). The church was established in 1887 and held its first service in the current structure in 1894. It started small but dedicated to God, Country and Community. It is still small but still dedicated to God, Country and Community. We are once again in the throes of searching for a priest but in the meantime, our lay community has risen admirably to the challenge of “keeping the home fires burning”. The lay ministry conducts Morning Prayer services for us on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month and we are fortunate enough to have two supply priests who celebrate Holy Communion with us on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Meantime our Vestry (the managing body of the church) and our Search Committee (charged with the task of finding a priest to recommend to the Vestry) are diligently performing their duties. Like a lot of churches all across the country, we struggle with numbers - people numbers, money numbers and any number of other numbers! But it dawned on me as I’ve been thinking about all this and the upcoming Holy Week and Glorious season of Easter, that way back then, Jesus didn’t have but 12 disciples (and one of them was more concerned about the money numbers than the people numbers). Our few and faithful make a commitment every week to God, Country and Community and this is a good spot to let them know they are not un-noticed ... by this page nor by those they serve.
