I want to personally thank the Temple B'nai Israel community for being so warm and welcoming as I reported this story, which was published this morning in the Forward. It will hopefully be the first of many articles I plan on writing about the history of Jews in McKeesport and the farmer who is building a new shul in a cornfield in rural Illinois (and a museum to honor TBI) — which I plan on turning into a book. Here's the first article >

Nik Jakobs, a farmer from Sterling, Illinois, is building Temple Sholom with pieces from Temple B’nai Israel in White Oak, Pennsylvania.

To the non-Jewish friends and others who follow this page, here's the thing:

All the slogans like “Free Palestine” “F@ Zionists/Israel” and “From the River to the Sea” when used as a a justification to gun down Jews and/or Israelis in cold blood, simply cannot mean anything other than the removal/killing/destruction of Jews when used in other settings. FULL STOP.

They are not slogans of resistance, liberation theology, or freedom fighting. They are words that can kill - and now they have, with no remorse.

When people tell you/show you who they are - BELIEVE THEM. This horrific terror attack will not stop the war, bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, or do anything to bring people together.

If you have chanted these words at a protest or encampment, check yourself. What did you *actually mean*? And if you don't understand your Jewish friends and colleagues who have grown fearful of these words - WHICH ARE NOT JUST WORDS, THEY ARE CALLS TO ACTION - maybe check yourselves and make a different choice than to use words that clearly are meant as weapons.

And maybe ask your Jewish friends and colleagues if they are ok. I for one, am not ok.

May Yaron and Sarah’s memory be a blessing. 💔
