Lent is a time of personal and spiritual growth, a time to look outward and inward. It is a journey in mercy.

This Wednesday, Lent begins, a liturgical season that focuses on the three spiritual pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This 40-day journey, beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending with Holy Week, is a time for sacrifice and spiritual reflection preparing us for the joyful celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.

As Catholics, the spiritual pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving guide us in daily reflection on our own lives as we strive to deepen our relationship with God and neighbor—no matter where in the world that neighbor may live.

One simple way to enhance your Lenten experience is to participate in . During Lent, Catholic families across the United States use a Rice Bowl—a small cardboard box—to collect alms. Each Rice Bowl comes with a calendar that guides families through the 40 days of Lent with activities, reflections, recipes and stories.

It’s a great way for your whole family to get involved. Start your Lenten journey with us: https://bit.ly/3FQ9yHF.

Even though Fam Cat has expanded the role of the parents in faith formation, there is still a critical need for catechists to pass on the faith to our young people. Although many of our wonderful veteran catechists are returning next year, we always need new catechists to come forward!

The way the new model is set up allows catechists to teach as often as every week and as little as once a month. We have a particular need for catechists during the John Section, which takes place approximately once a month from 5:30 to 6:50 pm. You can view the complete schedule for the year on the parish website: www.archangelgabrielparish.org/children

Please prayerfully discern if God may be calling you to this important ministry. If you have questions or would like to talk about it, please reach out to me at [email protected] or 412-787-2140 x106. Archangel Gabriel Faith Formation needs good people to volunteer. We need you.

There is no room for racism in our society or in our hearts. Every single person has God-given dignity and worth.

Pray these words today and ask for God's healing hand to help us bring about equality and peace.

A Message from Father Dave on May 17, 2020:

Dear brothers and sisters of Archangel Gabriel Parish,

I am grateful to Bishop Zubik for the opportunity to reopen our churches. At Archangel Gabriel, we begin with small baptisms, weddings, and funerals, but at a pace set not to overburden the parish with the great expense of sanitization.

We also look forward to celebrating Mass publicly, even if for the foreseeable future only a small number of people may be present. The Bishop expects us to follow the rules laid out by civil and health officials regarding sanitization. At Archangel Gabriel, we're still working to ascertain how best to implement those rules in our three churches, in addition to obtaining all the equipment and supplies needed to keep our churches clean and safe. I am therefore not yet sure how or when we will be able to reopen our churches for private prayer or public Mass.

For now, we continue with confessions and perpetual adoration in the parking lot at St. Malachy Church, and then beginning June 1, my plan is to hold Masses in the Holy Trinity Church parking lot until we can reopen one or more of our churches.

To stay up to date please text the letters “AGP” to 84576 or visit ArchangelGabrielParish.flocknote.com
