The people prepared themselves before he ever arrived by prayer and fasting. You can see the results. Experiencing the Holy Spirit is not confined to a denomination.

One revival uncommonly heard of is the 1896 Shearer Schoolhouse Revival, but it was this Pentecostal outpouring that paved the way for the well known 1905 Azusa Street Revival.

Rev. R.G. Spurling was a Baptist minister who grew tired of the stagnant spiritual condition of the mountain people in North Carolina. He began to evangelize throughout the Appalachians spreading a fresh revival of holiness. The people gave themselves to fasting and prayer anticipating a great move of God. This ultimately led to a ten day revival meeting at the Shearer Schoolhouse in Camp Creek, North Carolina. People came from all over the mountains.

Almost from the start of the meeting, the altars were filled with repentant sinners and seekers for the experience of sanctification. And the interest increased until unexpectedly, like a cloud, the Holy Ghost began to fall on the honest, humble, sincere seekers after God. One after another fell under the power of God, and soon quite a number were speaking in other tongues.

News of this Holy Spirit outpouring spread to adjoining counties and people came to witness the phenomenon of Spirit-filled believers speaking in an unknown language. Many sick persons were healed and hundreds of hard sinners were converted.

John 14:16-20
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be IN YOU. I will not leave you comfortless: I WILL COME TO YOU. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I AM IN my Father, and YE IN ME, and I IN YOU.

JESUS RETURNED BACK TO THE FATHER AS SPIRIT SO THEY COULD ‘COME’ TO INDWELL US AS SPIRIT.

2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

This scripture tells us that God's time is not the same as ours. Keep that in mind when reading His Word, especially, Gen. 1. And remember, EVERY DAY is the Lord's Day, because He is THE DAY.

PHIL 4:6-7 (AMP) Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God's peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

The enemy was given the realm of the carnal mind. This is where fear and anxiety dwell. God wants us to come up higher and dwell in the realm of His Spirit. Fear, anxiety, etc., cannot dwell there. This takes a constant communication with Him to dwell in His presence. Read His Word, sing and rejoice in him, pray, play worship music. Dwell on Him constantly. This leaves no door open for the old dragon to enter.

He that is in you is greater than he that is in the world. Don't ever forget that when fear tries to overtake you. Perfect Love (God) casts out fear. Start rejoicing instead of giving into fear. 'Know' who you really are IN God.
