Have you ever been mad at a friend for something they did, only to turn around and do the same thing yourself? Listen, we’ve all been there! It’s so easy to judge others for the things they do that hurt us, but it’s much more difficult to look at ourselves in the same light. To be honest about our actions and how they might impact others. Jesus knows this is something we struggle with, which is why He reminds us to be real about our faults instead of pointing out things we see others. Instead of worrying about how others live, we can focus on how we live. Are our words, choices, and actions in line with the way Jesus calls us to live? If not, that’s our sign to make a change—to move closer to what we’re made for!

What is an area in your life can you honestly admit you need to grow in? Pray today and ask God to help you be honest with yourself about what you may need to work on. Ask God to keep your focus there and to work in your life to help you become more of the person Jesus calls you to be.

““And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Glow Stick

Glow sticks are extremely cool. They have a way of illuminating the dark areas with loads of fluorescent colors. The vibrancy of the stick is hard to go unnoticed in any room that lacks light. Yet the coolest part of the glow stick isn’t so much the color that it exudes, but the process to get it lit. Before any glow stick can be lit, it must be broken.

In order for us to become a visible light in a dark world, we must be broken.

Now, I’m not saying that some ACME-type anvil has to fall on you to break you, but more so being torn within our spirit over the areas in our lives that aren’t pleasing to God.

Coming to Jesus with a broken spirit is all about recognizing our flaws and need to depend on Him daily as well as allowing Him to reflect His light in the darkest parts of the world we live in.

The Apostle Paul reminds the church in Corinth that we shouldn’t just be sorry about our actions that keep us away from God, but we should turn away from them and turn to Him for guidance.

Your ability to present yourself broken before the Lord is the catalyst that ignites the light within you to illuminate every dark corner in your world.

What are some things in your life that are keeping your light from shining as bright as it should? Could it be pride that is telling you that you’re good? Is it your circle of influence that may be holding you back? Whatever it is, if we are unable to be broken before God, we will be unable to experience all that He has to offer to us.

Today be like a glow stick and break yourself before the Lord in order to shine bright.

1. How can you become “broken” before the Lord today?

2. How can your brokenness not just have an effect on you, but also on your circle of friends, family, peers, and even your community?

3. PRAY: Lord, today I recognize that I don’t have life figured out. I’m sorry if there is anything in my life that is hindering me from fully experiencing you, but today I exchange my sorrow for your grace and love. Help me shine bright in my home, school and workplace. AMEN!

“For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭7‬:‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬
