Love is one of the most talked about subjects in our world and yet it is also one of the most confusing. Our culture constantly tries to redefine love through emotions, preferences, and personal experience. The problem is that when we define love on these terms, the definition keeps changing. What one person calls love, another person rejects; what feels like love one moment, may disappear as soon as life gets difficult.
This week’s text in 1 John 4 takes us in a completely different direction. Instead of allowing us to define love for ourselves, John points us to the cross and shows us that authentic love is defined in the cross. In these verses, John reminds us that authentic love reflects God’s very nature and is displayed most clearly in Christ coming to earth for sinners.
As we walk through this text together, we will see once again that John refuses to separate belief from behavior. Authentic faith produces authentic evidence and one of the clearest evidences of truly knowing God is the presence of authentic love in the life of the believer.
This passage challenges us in a very personal way because John is not merely talking about emotional feelings or sentimental words. He is describing a love that is active, sacrificial, initiating, and enduring. It is the kind of love that moves toward others even when it is difficult - a love that reflects the character of Christ.
At the heart of the message is the gospel. John points us directly to Christ and reminds us that God revealed his love for us by sending Jesus into the world and offering us life through him. We will see how the cross defines real love and why the death and resurrection of Christ remain central to understanding both salvation and the Christian life.
This is a text that will both challenge us and comfort us. We will be challenged in how our claims line up with our actions with the reminder that we will look like who we belong to. But we will also find comfort in being reminded that God’s love is real, life-giving, and unchanging. As followers of Christ, we cannot settle for empty claims of faith that are disconnected from the transforming life of Christ.
I hope you are already making plans to be with us Sunday as we remember God’s great love for us and worship together.
See you Sunday!
