Psalm 64

“But God himself will shoot them with his arrows, suddenly striking them down. Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn. Then everyone will be afraid; they will proclaim the mighty acts of God and realize all the amazing things he does”
(Ps. 64:7-9 NLT).

Earlier in this psalm, David wrote about his enemies shooting their arrows at him, but he trusts God to shoot down his arrows on his enemies. God sees the injustices that take place in your home, and know that he will make sure that justice is served in his good time. Sometimes we may think that people are getting away with doing others wrongly, but eventually it will come back to bite them. Galatians 5:15 says, “But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.” When you are doing harm to others in some way, it will not only destroy the other person, but it will also destroy you. It will hurt your own relationship with that person but it will also hurt your relationship with God which is most meaningful. If we are on the bad end of it and we are the ones being mistreated, we must trust God and let him straighten it all out and we must focus on being a blessing and encouragement to others. God will set things straight that we often make more crooked than they already were when we try by our own efforts and attempts.

Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD. Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good”
(Rom. 12:19-21 NLT).

“I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’ Indeed, the LORD will give justice to his people,
and he will change his mind abouthis servants, when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free”
(Deut. 32:35-36 NLT).

Psalm 63

“O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory”
(Ps. 63:1-2 NLT).

The psalmist David was in a dry place here both physically and spiritually. During this particular time, he remembers what he experienced when he was in the sanctuary. He remembers all the times where he had sweet communion and fellowship with God, and how it transformed his life entirely. Sometimes we will go through dry seasons in our life where the feelings of excitement seem to go away, but I believe God wants us to learn to live by faith and not by feeling. God wants to see us trust him even when we are in a desert place in our life, so we might allow his power and glory to transform us. The key to enduring these dry times is to just continue seeking the LORD. Continue to do what you know God wants you to do and you will experience his blessing all over your life. Remember that these times are just seasons and seasons are meant to pass, so just allow God to have his way in your life.

“I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver
and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘These are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God’
(Zech. 13:9 NLT).

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today”
(Matt. 6:33-34 NLT).

Psalm 62

“He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress where I will not be shaken”
(Ps. 62:6 NLT).

The psalmist David gives advice to his own soul to just be quiet before the presence of God. In V.2 he says that he will never be shaken. In V.6 he says that again that he will not be shaken. You see, he is encouraging himself in God that he will stand firm and stand strong in the Lord. He is speaking encouragement to his own soul. While other people may attempt to encourage you, at the end of the day you must find encouragement within yourself and your own relationship with God. Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue can bring death or life.” If we choose to speak words of anxiety and fear, we will find ourselves in bo***ge to our situation. We must look to God for our hope and strength. Remember in Hebrews 13:5-6 that there is first a promise that the Lord will never leave us or forsake us, but then there is a response to that truth that says, so we can say with confidence.” You see that there is the theological truth, but then it’s our attitude and response to the truth that determines the stability, security, and strength and peace that we experience in our life through our relationship with God. God wants us to overcome daily, not those who live defeated lives. God has blessed us too much for us to not choose to thrive spiritually and in every way in this life.

“But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint”
(Isa. 40:31 NLT).

“This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self discipline”
(2 Tim. 1:6-7 NLT).

Psalm 61

“O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry out to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings!”
(Ps. 61:1-4 NLT).

The psalmist David knew that there were going to be times when his heart felt overwhelmed, but he also knew that in those times they were opportunities for him to cry out to God for his help. He knew that he could always go to God, and he even called God his towering rock of safety. The rock is symbolic of stability and security, something strong enough to stand against crashing waves. He calls God his his towering rock of safety which implies a place above himself, a place higher than his wisdom and abilities. You see, sometimes God allows us to go through hard times so that we will look up and look higher than ourselves. We tend to trust in our own abilities and sometimes God needs that trust to be shifted from ourselves to God, so that we might grow in our relationship with God. We are all going to face times in our life where we feel stressed and overwhelmed, not really knowing what to do in our situation. This is a time for us to really draw near to God for his wisdom and direction, to draw near to God for his strength and help. He will lead us to a safe place underneath his presence and protection.

“The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe”
(Prov. 18:10 NLT).

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him”
(Ps. 91:1-2 NLT).

“For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory. The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you”
(Ps. 32:7-8 NLT).

Psalm 60

“Have you rejected us, O God? Will you no longer march with our armies? Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless. With God’s help we will do mighty things, for he will trample down our foes”
(Ps. 60:10-12 NLT).

The psalmist David realized that the secret of his strength and the source of his success was not found in the power of his armies, but in the power of Almighty God. He came to realize that his armies were nothing unless they were empowered and directed by God. David really needed to learn this lesson as we often do. You’ll remember back in 2 Samuel 24 that David sinned against God when he decided that he would number his army. David showed that he was relying on his own strength and resources in that situation, and this is something that all of us are guilty of from time to time. Sometimes, as we get older and begin to accomplish some things, we can foolishly think that it’s our abilities, resources, and personality that has caused us to be successful instead of it being God alone. Yes, it is true that we are responsible in our behavior in these matters to be faithful with what God has given us, but we must also make sure that we give God all the glory and credit with our lips and with the condition of our heart. God doesn’t want us trusting in our resources, but trusting in him. You see, God will sometimes trim down on our earthly resources as a blessing and service to us so that we mighty learn to fully rely on God in all things. This is an important lesson that we all need to learn more deeply, that without God’s blessing, help, and strength, our world will collapse. Stability comes from the Lord.

“Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!” Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
(Jn. 6:5-9 NLT).

“We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us”
(2 Cor. 1:8-10 NLT).

Psalm 59

“But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love”
(Ps. 59:16-17 NLT).

The psalmist David writes about the things that he is dealing with in this psalm which involve many difficult times, but I love how David is locked in and focused on the presence and the qualities of God. David says that he will bring praise to God for his power in his situation. Every morning he says that he will have joy in his heart as he praises God for his love that never fails. Each morning he will praise God for being his safe place, the place of strength and security in times of distress. He simply praises God and calls God his strength as he realizes that it is God’s love that always get him through. Sometimes when we go through difficulties, we find it hard to praise God because we don’t feel that we are getting what we deserve. But let us remember but for a moment that because we are all sinners before God’s holiness, all we deserve is physical, spiritual, and eternal death. God loved us anyways and sent his Son Jesus Christ to die for all of our sins so that we can be forgiven, have righteousness, and have eternal life. We don’t deserve to have God’s love, joy, and peace in our life through his wonderful presence- but that is all promised for all of us through Jesus Christ. Seeing how good that God is and focusing on all the blessings of God will encourage us to praise and keep our hope even in hard times. Let us choose to just praise God every day and see how he works in your life, he will do amazing wonders for you and in you as you wait for him.

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again- my Savior and my God!”
(Ps. 42:11 NLT).

“Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!”
(Hab. 3:17-18 NLT).
