Are Tattoos Wrong for a Christian?
This is a question many sincere believers wrestle with—and it deserves an honest, Bible-based answer.
The Bible does speak directly about markings on the body. In the Old Testament, God commanded the children of Israel:
> “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.”
— Leviticus 19:28 (KJV)
This verse clearly prohibits marking the body—but it's also important to understand the context. These instructions were given to Israel to separate them from pagan practices. In that time, tattooing and body markings were often tied to idol worship, witchcraft, or honoring the dead.
So the real question becomes: Does this still apply to us today under the New Covenant?
As followers of Jesus Christ, we are not under the ceremonial law of Moses—but that doesn't mean everything from the Old Testament is irrelevant. We still use principles from the Old Testament to guide us in holiness, especially when they are consistent with the New Testament.
In the New Testament, while tattoos are not mentioned directly, we are given guiding principles:
> “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (KJV)
If we belong to God, then even what we do with our physical bodies should bring Him glory.
That means we ask:
Does this glorify God?
Will it help or hinder my witness to others?
Is it being done out of a heart to honor God—or to follow a trend?
Some may say, “My tattoo is of a cross or a Bible verse—so it represents God.” While intentions matter, we must also ask: Did God ask for this form of worship? Often, true holiness is less about what feels good and more about what is set apart for Him.
Let’s also be gentle here: Many believers got tattoos before coming to Christ—or even out of a desire to honor Him. There is no condemnation for that.
> “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
— Romans 8:1 (KJV)
But for those walking with the Lord now, it's worth asking prayerfully: Lord, what do You want me to do with my body? If there’s any doubt, wait. The Holy Ghost will lead you in peace.

Final Thought: The question is not “Can I have a tattoo and still be saved?”—salvation is through faith and obedience to the gospel. The real question is: “Now that I belong to Jesus, how can I best reflect His image to the world?”
Walk in love. Walk in truth. And let everything we do be done unto the Lord.
