FITTING IN

You watched me as I was being formed in . . . the dark of the womb. PSALM 139:15 NLT

Do you ever try to blend in with others with the hope that they will accept you? You lay down your unique identity and strengths in order to belong. It’s not only exhausting, but deep within you, you feel lost and isolated. Friend, God created you exactly as He wanted you—with your personality, gifts, and temperament. When you find yourself hiding your real self in order to fit in with others, you need to stop and ask, Why am I so afraid to be myself? What value is this person or group of people providing that merits denying who I am? What do I think I will gain by this? And if they truly cannot accept the real me, are they worth being with? Most likely, no matter what advantages that person or group brings to your life, it won’t be worth the cost to your own heart. Denying who God made you to be means cutting off the flow of His power and purpose in your life. That damages you, stifles your creativity, and limits your influence. You end up cutting yourself off from the very intimacy you desire so intensely. Don’t do it.

Jesus, the way You created me to be is good. Help me embrace all You formed me to be. Amen.

WATCH FOR LOVE

“The Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me.” JOHN 16:27

Do you realize that God desires to communicate His great love to you on a daily basis? He wants you to know how much you mean to Him and how He delights in having a relationship with you. His love may come to you in the form of an unexpected blessing or provision, a call from a loved one, the kindness of a stranger, a favorite Scripture or song, or a hug from a child. Whatever it may be, each day God has a new way of showing how profoundly He cares for you. Often, however, we might miss out on the Lord’s overtures because we’re not looking for them or are avoiding fellowship with Him. We complain about what we lack and become so focused on our problems and burdens that we forget to listen to Him. But when we do, we miss all the reasons He’s given us to rejoice—and they are many. Don’t do that; instead, watch for His love. The Lover of your soul never runs out of unique and profoundly touching ways to tell you that He cares about you. So be on the lookout and be grateful. Because there are so many wonderful things He wants to say to you.

Jesus, thank You for loving me! I rejoice in all the ways You care for me. Amen.

BROKEN FOR FREEDOM

By His knowledge the deeps were broken up and the skies drip with dew. PROVERBS 3:20

Sometimes when we experience trials, we may erroneously believe that God has rejected us or is punishing us in some way. However, one of the ways the Lord helps us become His disciples is through the process of brokenness. Brokenness is God’s method of dealing with our dependence on anything other than Him for fulfillment and security. No matter how committed we may be to God, we’ll always fight the inclination to do things our way rather than His. So Jesus endeavors to bring every area of our lives into submission to His will by permitting times of difficulty that liberate us from false sources of identity—showing us how faulty they really are. Likewise, He works through our trials to transform us into His likeness and give us purpose, equipping us for all He has planned. Jesus continually breaks down the obstacles within us until we’re completely surrendered to Him and trust Him fully. That is why I encourage you to be in God’s Word daily. Because through Scripture, Christ speaks to your heart, strengthens you, and encourages you as He sets you free from what keeps you bound. He teaches you the truth that sets you free (John 8:32).

Jesus, being broken is painful, but I know You’re setting me free. Amen.

TRUST YOUR LORD

The LORD will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones. ISAIAH 58:11

When you place your trust in Jesus, you accept Him as your Lord. This new relationship and identity will increasingly necessitate that you abandon yourself to Him and willingly let go of the things that comprise your worldly security and fulfillment. Your heart may long for financial, social, relational, or sexual fulfillment, or you may wish to dull your pain with food or other substances. But material possessions and earthly solutions cannot fill the deep, unsettling voids that you feel or heal the wounds you have. This is why Jesus told His disciples to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Everything you truly need is already yours in Christ. Giving yourself to Jesus does not mean you lose; rather, it means you are firmly on track for the best life possible. Will it be perfect and trouble-free? No. But your Savior always gives you much more than earthly solutions could ever provide—and what He gives you, no one will ever be able to take away.

Jesus, I want to trust You as my Lord. Thank You for teaching me how to give every area over to You and for fulfilling my deepest needs. Amen.

CLOSE UNION

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” JOHN 14:6

We may sometimes think of today’s verse in terms of salvation, but it is true of the Christian life as well. Jesus wants to be your way, your truth, and your life. In Him and through Him are the Father’s will for you. So we should never mistakenly think, God’s not really interested in teaching me, leading me, or revealing His will. Yes, He certainly is—more than you can ever possibly imagine (Romans 8:32). Not only is the Lord attentive to the great and impactful circumstances of your life, but He is also observant of details so small they escape your notice. He cares about the burdens, challenges, and conflicts that concern you. What God wants most from you is a personal relationship where you walk with Him in such close union that you’re consistently aware of His presence. Yes, He wants that. In fact, that’s why He has given His own Spirit to live within you and direct you.

Jesus, thank You for being my way, my truth, and my life. Help me fix my eyes on You and trust You in every circumstance so I can be a reflection of Your love and grace to others. Amen.
