History of Zion Cemetery as told by Harold W. Ferguson

The Zion cemetery was originally owned by the Holland Land Company. The Holland Land Company and the Pennsylvania Population Company acquired large tracts of land in northwestern Pennsylvania and upstate New York for speculation purposes as part of the Last Purchase obtained by treaty in 1784 . The Holland Land Company sold their land between 1801 and 1840. High Brosious purchased the land that included Zion Cemetery for the Evangelical Christian Church. When the Evangelical church was founded, many churches were trying to establish themselves. The revival meetings were common among the Methodists and Evangelicals. The churches in this area primarily grew as a result of these revival meetings. The revivals included many spiritual singers who traveled throughout the area as part of the efforts to grow the churches and spirituality.

The original Evangelical church, in which Mary Ellen Gearhart Ferguson was a member, was most likely made of logs. Mary Elizabeth Ferguson, who passed away September 1936 was married in the original church that established the Zion Cemetery. Zion Evangelical Church was situated adjacent to the cemetery next to the Dan Young Farm. Leo Gearhart was Mary Ellen’s father. My father’s grandmother Boyer was also married to a Gearhart, but probably not the same family. At that time there weren’t that many people to “go around” so there was some intermarriage. Probably the oldest grave in the Zion Cemetery is that of Byers, Laird Byers’s grandfather.
