The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. (Psalm 24:1)
One of the coolest pictures I've seen this week was the shot of Earth from the Artemis II mission. The sun is actually behind the earth in this photo, but the moonlight has lit up the backside just enough to get a picture. You can see the Saharan desert in Africa along with the city lights along Egypt, Europe, and even South America. It is such a really neat picture. We continue to pray for the four astronauts on their mission as they travel behind the moon later today.
The Bible tells us that the Earth, yes the one in that picture, was created by the God. (Genesis 1:1) The entire world and everything within it belongs to Him (Psalm 24:1). And indeed He is the Lord over all of the heavens and the earth (Acts 17:24).
He is Creator, Owner, and Lord. But most importantly, the Bible also tells us that He loves the world. His love was so deep that He sent His only Son to come to the earth, so that we can believe on Him and have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
When we take a step back and look at the earth, we are looking at what the Lord loves. Every human being that has ever lived has lived on this planet, and that is whom Christ died for. You'll never meet another person who hasn't lived on earth. And you will never look into the eyes of someone that is not precious to Him.
So while this is a really cool image, it would be a tragedy to miss the Lord in this. With every advancement in human technology, it is a new opportunity to give Him praise and honor. With the invention of the printing press, we could print and distribute the Word. With the invention of planes, we could send missionaries to far away places with the gospel. With the invention of the internet and social media, we can share and encourage believers everywhere with God's promises. And with the invention of rockets, space missions, and cameras we can sit back and worship His majesty. Whatever humans come up with next, the Lord will be there ahead of us.
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (Psalm 19:1)
