Maxwell Hispanic Cemetery

Maxwell Hispanic Cemetery I created this page in hopes of locating family members of the deceased buried in this cemetery.

The majority of the families buried here are from Guanajuato, Mexico but few are from surrounding areas around Maxwell.

Today, Steven Bermudez uncovered the headstone of his great-great-grandfather, Anecleto Bermudes, while removing mesquite. This experience reinforces my belief that our family's souls direct us to their resting places, seeking recognition and connection from their living descendents. 🩷

We would like to thank the Bermudez familia for coming out to help the Rocha familia with the Maxwell Hispanic Cemetery clean up today.

Together we were able to clear a drive path to the front of the cemetery and cut and load brush to take away. 🩷

Hello All, We are having a cemetery clean up Saturday, October 12. We will meet at the gate of the property at 8am. Please note it is extremely difficult to drive into the property without a truck. Please plan accordingly.

If you'd like to help bring your work gloves, w**d eaters and lawn mowers if you have them. Hedge cutters, Loppers, chainsaws or Machetes are useful for the mesquite. More of us cutting can give us more time to admire our work and visit our loved ones.

If you aren't able to help but would like to just come visit we welcome you to come! Flowers for the graves are welcomed as well.

Please wear pants and close toed shoes or boots to be safe.

If you don't know where the gate to the property is that day you can park at the Sunco gas station at FM 142 and Railroad St and give me a call 512-669-3278 and I can direct you to the gate.

We will provide: Water, Gatorade, Sodas and small snacks.

Today the landowner allowed us onto the property to check on the cemetery. We are so disappointed to see that in 6 months we are back to square one.

We cleared a path in April for the Lara Family's 100 yr old grandmother to see her father where you could see the back fence of the cemetery and now it's all overgrown with mesquite again. 💔

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the benefit yesterday in every way! For every person who stepped in to make rice, beans, fixings & donate their time and money to run to the store, run to deliver, hold signs, pass out flyers serve, set up and take down or purchase a plate and drinks. We truly appreciate Anthony Fuentes for donating his time on a hot day making around about 150 quater chicken legs!!! And of course Advance Auto Parts for allowing us to use space in their parking lot for our benefit. It was such a great turn out and I am so happy to know there are other families out there who want to visit their loved ones here. This is big!! You all will be blessed! 🙏

If you missed it and still want to make a donation please see our GoFundMe! No donation is too small!

Hello,

We are fundraising for a new fence for the Maxwell Hispanic Cemetery that is near and dear to the families of hispanic laborers who worked on the surrounding farms and buried their loved ones between 1895 and 1955.

We will be at the Advance Auto Part store in Lockhart, TX selling $10 BBQ Chicken Plates & $2 Hot Dogs on Saturday, September 30th, 2023, 11am-5pm.

If you are not able to make it that day but want to donate, we also have a GoFundMe available for donations.

Hello,

This cemetery is very near and dear to my family. We have numerous relatives who once lived and worked on this land and who were buried here at the Maxwell Hispanic Cemetery. My grandfather Fernando Rocha upkept this cemetery until the day he died in 2010 at the young age of 103 years. My family & mainly my mother and father kept their promise to my grandfather to keep the cemetery going and one day find others who have had their beloved relatives buried here to safely visit their loved ones.
Through the years the private land that the cemetery sits on has changed several owners. Every owner my mother has had some contact with and was allowed on the property to "visit" the graves. At that time she and my dad would clean these graves and give them much-needed love. However, since the start of COVID in 2019 and their age, & the pending sale of the land to a new owner/developer. The cemetery has been overgrown with trees, and tall grass and riddled with rattlesnakes. We are in the process of getting the Texas Historical Commission to have a historical plaque placed on the cemetery. We want to save it from any new developments that the new land owner may have in mind in the near future and also hope to have a public road built so relatives of the deceased can visit. However, this takes volunteers, manpower, machinery to clean up this cemetery. My parents in their mid 70's cannot do this on their own anymore with two lawnmowers and a w**d eater. We need the help more than ever now. If you know anyone buried in this cemetery or remember your abuelitos, your padres, or older tios speaking of this cemetery in the middle of Maxwell somewhere. Please reach out to me. I have a list of confirmed burials that I have been putting together since I graduated high school in 2005. I've grown up cleaning this cemetery every start of spring and summer since 1994. No one knows as much as my family knows about this cemetery. Let's put the pieces together so you can see your loved ones!

If you may think that your relative is buried here please send me a message with their name, first and last. Their mother's name & maiden name with their father's name. Their date of birth or date of death. Anything useful to help me find them and verify if they are indeed buried at the Maxwell Hispanic Cemetery.

Thank you for your time,

Hope to hear from you.

-Rocha Family
