The Impact of Hidden Sin , Joshua 7:5-7
In this message, Joshua is presented as a powerful picture of Christ and of Godâs design for a life of faith, obedience, and dependence. The focus of this sermon is Israelâs shocking defeat at Ai, following their great victory at Jericho, and how that defeat exposes the devastating consequences of hidden sin.
Pastor David reminds us that Israelâs loss was not a military failureâit was a spiritual failure. The root cause was Achanâs hidden sin, compounded by Joshuaâs drift into self-reliance and failure to seek Godâs direction. Success had subtly shifted the people from dependence on God to confidence in themselves.
From Joshua 7:5â7, Pastor David outlines five major impacts of hidden sin, noting that four are deeply destructive, while the fifthâthough painfulâcan become redemptive.
1. Hidden Sin Empowers Enemies
Israel, once confident in Godâs promise, suddenly becomes vulnerable. Thirty-six men are killed, and the army flees in fear. Pastor David explains that sin removes Godâs protective hand, empowering enemies spiritually and practically. Hidden sin opens doors for Satan to steal, kill, and destroy, not just individuals, but families, churches, and communities.
2. Hidden Sin Weakens Faith
The peopleâs hearts âmelt and become as water.â Their confidence in God collapses. Pastor David emphasizes that while adversity can strengthen faith, unaddressed sin often causes believers to question Godâs faithfulness rather than examine their own disobedience.
3. Hidden Sin Makes the Courageous Fearful
Even Joshuaâcommanded by God to be strong and courageousâfalls into despair and confusion. Pastor David highlights that no believer, no matter how mature or faithful, is immune to spiritual collapse if sin is allowed to remain hidden.
4. Hidden Sin Causes Godâs People to Settle for Less
Joshuaâs lament that they should have stayed on the other side of the Jordan reveals how far his thinking has fallen. Pastor David warns that hidden sin pushes believers toward compromise, retreat, and blending in with the world instead of boldly advancing Godâs mission.
5. Hidden Sin Can Bring the Prideful to Their Knees
Joshua and the elders tear their clothes, fall on their faces, and humble themselves before God. Pastor David stresses the word can: devastation does not automatically produce repentance, but when met with humility, it can lead to restoration. People either turn to God in brokenness or turn away in rebellion.
Throughout the message, Pastor David explains that God often allows adversityânot to destroy His peopleâbut to reorient their hearts, restore dependence, and bring humility. Using the illustration of a needlepoint, he shows how what appears chaotic and painful from our limited perspective is part of a beautiful design known fully only to God.
A powerful personal testimony illustrates these two responses to pain: rebellion or surrender. When hardship is met with humility, God brings light, healing, and renewed faith. Defeat does not have to be the end of the storyâit can be the turning point.
Pastor David reminds us that salvation is not religion, ceremony, or words, but heart-level repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. For believers, the call is to expose hidden sin, stop trusting self, and walk closely with God. For the lost, the call is to respond to Christ, who draws hearts out of darkness and into His light.
