We live overstimulated, hyper caffeinated society. We have lost simple gift of just being. To sit in silence and just be observant of our surroundings and interact with each other. It first started all those years ago when they put the radio in the automobile. Think about it. Before that event all people had to do on a drive was to sit in silence and observe what was around them or engage in conversation. Now we can’t go the 45 seconds during a traffics signal change without pulling out out phones for a quick scroll session. We are afraid of the silences. We get anxious in the stillness. But in those moments is where God speaks. In the Old Testament, the prophet Elijah was lodging in a cave after fleeing from Jezebel waiting for God to speak. He did not find the Almighty God in the earthquake, the storm, or the fire. The all powerful Creator God came in the whisper. The world shout and screams and rages. God does not. Silence and stillness is where God speaks. Don’t be afraid of the silence. Teach yourself that’s it’s ok to be still. God told us through David in Psalm 42 to “be still and know I Am God.” As I tell my children when they say they are bored. It’s ok to be bored sometimes. That’s the space where our imagination and creativity comes to life. God hasn’t stopped speaking. He isn’t silent. He is just waiting for us to stop and listen.
