THEN & NOW - St. John's Church, Corning
In yesterday's Corning post, you got a glimpse of the tall steeple of St. John's Church the distance. Here's an up-close view of the structure.
St. John's was an Evangelical Lutheran church when it was built in 1883. There also was a parochial school -- lessons were taught in both English and German -- associated with the church. Notice that the sign on the 19th Century view of the church is written in German.
We don't know if the building remained an Evangelical Lutheran church throughout its lifespan, or if it later was the home to other denominations. Comment, if you know.
We think St. John's is the most distinctive historic church building that is still standing in Holt County. If you disagree, let us know what your choice would be.
Today the building is no longer in use, but from the outside, the only evident major change is the addition on the (left) south side of the back of the church.
