On two consecutive days we celebrate two powerful saints: St. Augustine and his mother, St. Monica. St. Monica knew the struggle of having a strained marriage and a wayward, lost child. St. Augustine, as we know, lived an unruly life into adulthood until confronted by the truth of Scripture. In the meantime, he fathered a child; that child would accompany him into baptism and later died around 18 years of age. St. Augustine knew the struggle of an unplanned pregnancy and the horrors of losing a child.
Many pregnancy clinics minister to fathers as well as mothers. For example, Parkville Women's Clinic offers a Fatherhood Program and Father Mentors who support the dads involved in unplanned and crisis pregnancies. You have often heard it proclaimed: the youth are the future of the Church! On International Youth Day, we celebrate our youth. It is the youth who have pushed strongest for changes in respect life legislation, care for the vulnerable, and creative ways to protect our planet.
⁣
Prayer: Pope St. John Paul II, you called forth the youth of the world to holiness and challenged them to live for more. You gifted the Church with many new young saints and blesseds, including yourself, to give the youth role models for keeping the flame of faith alive and well. By your witness we recommit to living boldly and doing the Lord’s will. Amen.

Action: Our Youth Ministries are often the first places where youth are challenged to engage Church teaching and encounter Catholic Social Teaching through service projects and events. Consider contacting your local parish youth minister or director of religious education (DRE) to get involved with catechesis of the youth. Offer to teach a topic close to your heart that will encourage the youth to get active in Respect Life and Human Rights ministries!
