HERITAGE DAY 2026

We recently celebrated God’s faithfulness in carrying us 191 years as a church. New and familiar faces joined together to rejoice in Christ’s work in and through Cedar Grove. Our former pastor, Gary McCammon, preached from Psalm 23 as he pointed us to Jesus, the good and faithful Shepherd who carries his sheep forever.

HYMN OF THE MONTH:

“Here Is Love, Vast as the Ocean (Everlasting Praise)” ( #155, Sing Hymnal)

Words: William Rees, 1847; tr. William Edwards, 1899; sts. 3–4, Matt Boswell, Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty © 2024 Getty Music Publishing / Messenger Hymns | Tune: JESUS ONLY, by Robert Lowry, 1876.

From Levi Fortner:
This precious hymn magnifies the mighty and bountiful love of Jesus in such a beautiful melding of melody and words. I love how a song has a story of its own, often affecting people for generations. This hymn played a prominent role in the Welsh revival of 1904–1905, years after Ree’s passing. One writer states, “As with any great evangelistic movement, its success was closely associated with music and musicians.” One notable revival singer was a young woman, Annie Davies of Maesteg. According to one account printed in 1907, this eighteen-year-old began to sing this hymn at the closing of an evening service with “tears on her face and victory in her voice.” Davies’ mother urged her daughters from an early age to use their musical gifts for religious causes. This hymn and its singers pointed many to the Savior who “kissed a guilty world in love.”

The text, originally in Welsh with two stanzas, has acquired additional verses over time through various writers and publications. The tune we are familiar with is ‘JESUS ONLY’ by American gospel composer Robert Lowry (1826–1899). Lowry wrote many of our familiar hymn tunes, such as tunes like “Shall We Gather at the River”, “Nothing But the Blood”, and “I Need Thee Every Hour”. Though this tune was originally published with a different hymn in 1877, it wasn’t until 1977 that it was paired with Edwards’ translation of Rees’ text was in Christian Hymns.

Consider how you will use this hymn devotionally, both personally and with your family. Read it at the dinner table, sing it during family worship or in the car, and meditate on the rich truths found in this timeless hymn.

Sing Hymnal Stories:
When revival swept Wales in 1904–1905, this song was vital to the movement, sometimes called the "mighty love-song of the revival." One writer at the time said, "The song is of the marvel of Divine Love, flowing as vast oceans of tender mercies in never-ebbing floodtide; of the very Prince of Life dying, dying to redeem our forfeit life." This hymn has long held a special place in our hearts, though at times it has felt incomplete. Inspired by the original version of the hymn, which quotes Revelation 1:5–6, we wrote two additional verses.

Christ is risen, and He reigns!

Yesterday, we gathered to celebrate this truth and were immensely blessed. We were reminded that because Christ lives, we have a blessed hope. If you were unable to gather with us or perhaps want to share it with others, you can hear Pastor Levi's sermon below. Be encouraged to take hold, by faith, the promises of our good God who raised Jesus from the dead.

Sermon from Pastor Levi Sanders from Romans 4:13-25 entitled, "He Was Raised for Our Justification." Preached on Resurrection Sunday of April 5, 2026.

“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” (Proverbs 12:25)

Our hearts were gladdened Sunday evening as we strengthened one another through song. Generations of musicians & believers sharpened one another through a time of singing, testimony, and Q&A on biblical worship and how we can practically worship & enjoy God on a daily basis.

We’d love to hear your voice at our next hymn sing on May 31 at 5:30p!

This service allows us time to reflect on the hours leading up to our Lord’s death, burial, and resurrection. Maundy Thursday refers to Thursday of Holy Week as Jesus celebrates the Passover with his disciples, giving them a new “mandate”: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. (John 13:34)

Experience the love of Christ as we gather to reflect on the Last Supper together on Thursday, April 2, at 6:30pm!

If you missed us last week, Pastor Levi walked us through John 3:16–21, inviting us to see the promise of this passage with fresh eyes. As we prepare to gather in the Lord’s name tomorrow and begin a new sermon series on worship, may last week’s message encourage your heart and draw you nearer to Christ today.

Sermon from Pastor Levi Sanders from John 3:16-21 entitled, "The Light of Christ." Preached on the Lord's Day of December 28, 2025.
