Devotion 31 October 2024 Judges 14:2 “Marriage.”

Judges 14:2
So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, "I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife."

Samson saw a woman he wanted as a wife. His parents advised against it, but he got what he wanted. The customary marriage celebration was to be a happy time, but for Samson and his new bride, it was a sad and troubling time.

Marriage requires great thought and consideration, planning, and reciprocal companionship. The couple's lifestyles and choices should be able to meld. Sadly, for Samson, her being who she was and him being who he was did not blend, and it ended in tragedy.

A wise Preacher once said many years ago, “It is better not to be married and wish you were than to be married and wish you weren’t.”

Devotion 30 October 2024 Judges 13:1 “That’s a Long Time”

Judges 13:1
Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.

God’s kids had a propensity to sin and rebel against God over and over again. God was watching over His kids, and what He saw was “Evil.” It is a sad indictment to be called a people who do “Evil,” this is usually a charge reserved for people who do not know God.

God had a way of dealing with His stubborn, rebellious, and evil children. Although it may seem harsh, unwarranted, and even cruel to be punished the way He did, it was the right thing to do.

Israel's punishment this time was for “Forty Years,” now that’s a long time, but it was what God ruled, and for forty years, the children of God had a hard life.

My takeaway from this is that since God has His angel encamping around us (Ps 34:7) and He watches over us every day, may what He sees in me, bring His blessing, not His punishment.

Devotion 25 October 2024 Judges 11:35d “Keeping Your Word to God”

Judges 11:35d
“For I have given my word to the LORD, and I cannot go back on it."

Jephthah carried with him some baggage. The son of a harlot, he was ostracized and removed from the family until they needed his military cunning. Soon, he would face the enemy he was asked to defeat, so Jephthah went before the LORD and made a vow.

Once the battle was won and joy returned to the people, Jephthah had a choice: keep his costly vow or take it back and forget God and what he had promised Him.

Jephthah saw the value of keeping his word to God, no matter how much it cost him. For Jephthah, it was more costly for him to take back what he promised God, therefore, “he carried out his vow with her which he had vowed.” V:39.

Devotion 23 October 2024 Judges 10:16 “Compassion Over Judgement”

So they put away the Judges 10:16
foreign gods from among them and served the LORD. And His soul could no longer endure the misery of Israel.

The sin the children of Israel were involved in caused them great distress, punishment and pain. Repeating rebellion and evil behavior distanced the people from a right relationship with God. When the people pleaded with God for His help God helped.

As bad as their betrayal was to God, God had compassion and a soul that “could no longer endure the misery” His people were in. What a wonderful view of the compassionate God we serve.

Even if God’s kids are rebellious but then repent, He has compassion and helps them, just imagine His kids who are not rebelling against Him, and cry out to Him for help, His compassion is there and it never changes, in fact they are new every morning and they fail not.

Devotion 21 October 2024 Judges 9:56 “God Repaid the Wickedness”

Judges 9:56
Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers.

Abimelech was the son of Gideon through a servant girl Gideon had; he was an evil, murderous man who became the first king of Israel. God was well aware of his evil and began to repay him for the wickedness he had done.

The God of Israel sees all, knows all, and is actively engaged in the affairs of men. God’s ways may seem disconnected from the decisions we humans make on this earth; however, not so, for throughout Scripture, we see God repaying the wickedness people do.

We are told in Scripture that all wickedness will one day be accounted for and paid for, and no one will escape His hand of justice.

Devotion 19 October 2024 Judges 8:34 “Take Time to Remember.”

Judges 8:34
Thus the children of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side;

Gideon and his men routed the enemy, and retribution is meted out to two cities for not helping God’s kids. A Youth learns what men must do in war, and the people request an earthly ruler, which is rejected. Gideon resorts to a seemingly harmless practice; by doing this, he snares himself, his family, and Israel.

As time passed and peace was restored to Israel, to Israel's detriment, the LORD their God was forgotten, and the people reverted back to worldly practices.

For one reason or another, we Christ-followers are prone to forget God in some way and revert to our familiar worldly ways and practices, all of which seem harmless and inconsequential. However, for many, this will be a snare for us, our children, and many who are affected and look to us as a moral compass.

Devotion 18 October 2024 Judges 7:18 “With God All things are Possible"

Judges 7:18
When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, 'The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!' "

From the beginning, when God called Gideon, Gideon had to make many decisions, from tearing down his dad’s false gods to deciding if God was going to do what He said and even facing his fear of losing in battle.

Yet, God never left Gideon but always comforted him, assured him, and carried him through the decision-making process. And Gideon won the victory because God saw to it.

God knows and sees all we are deciding and what we are up against. May we always remember that with God, all things are possible.

Devotion 17 October 2024 Judges 6:33-34a “The Many Against The One”

Judges 6:33-34a
Then all the Midianites and Amalekites, the people of the East, gathered together; and they crossed over and encamped in the Valley of Jezreel.
(34) But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon;

God was calling Gideon to do a task for Him: deliver Israel from a harsh and oppressive enemy. The day this enemy decided to gather to war against Israel was a day Israel was in a weakened militaristic condition.

The enemy made a strategic move by deploying thousands of troops against God and His people. However, God countered this move by having His Holy Spirit come upon only one man. It was the many against the one.

If God has spoken to you for some reason, maybe to do something, to have something, or to trust in Him for something, do not be surprised if many come out against you. Know this: once the Holy Spirit comes upon you, the many will not prevail; God will. Lord willing, we will see this principle in action tomorrow in our next devotion.

Devotion 15 October 2024 Judges 5:1 “A Woman-A Warrior and A Duet”

Judges 5:1
Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying:

Barak and Deborah sing this song of victory on the day Barak and his men defeated a harsh and cruel enemy who had oppressed Israel for many years. In this song, they recount how the battle was won and how God’s enemies fell.

It's good to recount what God has done in past battles and not let much time pass before giving Him praise and thanksgiving.

They end this victory song with a request, and may this be true for us who love the LORD, they sang:

Judges 5:31
"Thus let all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But let those who love Him be like the sun When it comes out in full strength." So the land had rest for forty years.

Keep loving our Lord, and keep shining like the sun…

Devotion 14 October 2024 Judges 4:8 “Will You Go with Me?”

Judges 4:8
And Barak said to her, "If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go!"

Barak is a Soldier called by God to deliver Israel from its current enemies. He will face his battle only if Deborah accompanies him. Deborah is a woman who hears from God, and Barak knows this. However, he also knows the gravity of such a war and the consequences of mortal combat.

War is horrible and incomprehensible, and understanding its destruction is difficult unless you were involved in some way. Barak weighed the option of going without this woman of God who heard from God or bringing her along; Barak decided to keep her close.

Whatever we face these days, may we keep God and His godly people close to us and listen to what He wants us to do next.

Devotion 12 October 2024 Judges 3:7 “Easily Forgetting God.”

Judges 3:7
So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs.

The children of Israel had gotten, for the most part, what they wanted concerning the promised land. They had been promised the land, and it took many years to get it, but finally, they had it.

The children of Israel were not long in their blessing until we read, “the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God.”

My takeaway from this day’s devotion is that as easy as it was for Israel to forget God when they got what they wanted, it can be for me. Therefore, I must not do evil and work hard at remembering God, and all He is to me, and all He has done for me.

Devotion 3 October 2024 Judges 2:23 “Now I Know Why”

Judges 2:23
Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out immediately; nor did He deliver them into the hand of Joshua.

God did a lot for Israel to deliver, help, feed, and protect them. He gives them good land and great prosperity. He even strengthens their hand in war to defeat many kings and people; however, we learn that it comes with commitment. V:1-3.

In Judges, many of our unanswered questions about what we are reading will begin to be answered as we read more of this book. In “Yesterday's” devotion, we did not understand why the wicked nations could not be defeated, but “TODAY,” we know. V:21-22.

There are things in life that are good for us and some that are bad for us, and knowing which to pursue can be a daunting and confusing decision. However, God knows what is best for us, and since He knows what is best, may we stick to His Word and follow His guidance.
