🧺✨ Honoring the Legacy of the M1 Food Pantry
A community effort, a community tradition, a community blessing.

From its beginnings in 1981, when Melvin and Patty Clark handed out their very first Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, the M1 Food Pantry grew into one of the most meaningful community ministries in Morgan County. By 1986, the pantry opened full-time—yet the Christmas baskets remained the heart of it all.

And as these photos show, the pantry was never just one or two people.
It was all of us.

💚 Volunteers who showed up early, stayed late, packed boxes, scheduled pickup times, organized food lines, lifted heavy loads, and greeted families with warmth and dignity.

💚 Donors and partners—churches, businesses, civic groups, schools, and everyday neighbors—who gave generously year after year. Whether it was a $10 donation, a trunk full of canned goods, or a grant check that kept shelves stocked, every gift helped feed a family.

💚 Community helpers from all walks of life—National Guard members, utility workers, pastors, children, seniors, first-time volunteers and long-time helpers—working side-by-side to make sure no one went without food during the holidays.

And through it all, Melvin and Patty Clark quietly led with faith, compassion, and a steadfast belief that neighbors should never go hungry. Their example inspired thousands of hours of volunteer service and helped the pantry become a lifeline for families throughout Morgan County.

These photos reflect decades of:
📦 Boxes stacked to the ceiling
🤝 Helping hands forming assembly lines
📝 Volunteers taking appointments and organizing distribution
🙏 Churches and businesses delivering support
🎁 And hundreds of Christmas baskets heading out the door each year

To Melvin & Patty…
To every volunteer who packed a box…
To every donor who filled a shelf…
To every partner who joined hands to serve…

❤️ Thank you for making the M1 Food Pantry a symbol of hope and community.

Your compassion fed bodies, lifted spirits, and strengthened our town for more than four decades.

If you need food assistance, or need to contact the Martinsville First Church of the Nazarene Food Pantry, this is NOT the page for that. You will need to reach out to the church or the pantry directly. This is an archive page, designed to protect the legacy and integrity of the pantry's original founders and dedicated volunteers for 43 years.

📸 Archive Feature: Moments From the Early Years of the M1 Food Pantry

As part of our effort to preserve the history of the original Martinsville First Church of the Nazarene Food Pantry, we’re sharing a few newspaper clippings from the 1990s that highlight just how deeply Melvin and Patty Clark, their volunteers, and the Martinsville community poured into this work.

These photos capture what the pantry truly was for more than four decades — a collaborative, community-powered effort driven by compassion, consistency, and countless hours of service.

🌾 What These Images Represent

From record-setting postal food drives to Thanksgiving basket deliveries, these snapshots show the pantry at its core: ordinary people stepping up to make sure no one in Morgan County went hungry.

Long before social media or community partnerships became widespread, Melvin and Patty built a pantry that withstood decades of storms — literal and figurative.
Floods, tornadoes, recessions, building damage… yet the work never stopped.

📚 Why They’re Being Shared Now

This page now serves as a historical archive of the pantry from 1981 to 2024, honoring the people who sustained it for its first 43 years. These moments, recorded in local newspapers, help tell that story.

More clippings and historical documents will be added as we continue archiving the pantry’s early years.

Thank you for helping us preserve this legacy. If you have photos, articles, or memories to contribute, feel free to message the page.

Community Update and Clarification

We have received questions about our earlier notice and wanted to offer additional clarification for the community, especially for those who still contact this page seeking food assistance.

This page was handed off some time ago to a small group of people who were connected to the pantry in past years and who wanted to preserve the legacy of its original founders and volunteer team. This became especially important to us following the passing of Melvin Clark, one of the two original founders. Our goal has simply been to maintain historical information and help direct community members to the correct place for assistance. No current pantry volunteers or current church attendees are involved in managing this page.

Because we continue to receive messages from families in need, we felt it was important to clearly explain why this page is no longer connected to the pantry’s current leadership and why we can no longer assist through this page.

To provide accurate historical context:

The pantry began in 1981, founded by Melvin and Patty Clark, and became a full-time mission in 1986.

Patty was not a “director in name only.” She was an original founder and co-director and remained actively involved throughout the pantry’s entire operation.

For more than forty years, the founders and volunteers kept the pantry operating through tornadoes, floods, economic downturns, and other significant challenges.

Regarding the transition in 2024:

In March 2024, the pantry completed its annual TEFAP assessment through Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and passed with only routine minor findings.

TEFAP assessments are normally annual, not repeated multiple times within the same year. A second, significantly different assessment just a few months later is highly uncommon, especially when the earlier review identified no serious deficiencies.

Documentation also shows that discussions about changing leadership were already underway before the second assessment occurred. This sequence—passing an annual review, followed by unexpected escalations, followed by a leadership change that had already been in motion—is not typical of standard TEFAP processes.

These statements are based on written records and documented timelines.
Because this page is not intended to be a debate forum, we are not posting those documents publicly. However, anyone who wishes to review official records may obtain them through the appropriate channels.

How to obtain official documentation:

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) oversees TEFAP statewide.

Under Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act (APRA), ISDH must release any non-confidential TEFAP-related records it possesses, including communications between ISDH and Gleaners, notifications of concerns or escalations, and summary findings related to a pantry’s status.

Additional records may be requested directly from Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, which maintains its own TEFAP files.

Our only purpose in posting these notices is to:

Inform followers that this page is no longer affiliated with the pantry’s current operation; and

Preserve an accurate public record of the pantry’s origins, development, and decades of service under its founding leadership and volunteer team.

Different perspectives will always exist.
Our goal is simply to provide clarity for the community and to honor the work that served Morgan County families for more than forty years.

Thank you for your understanding.

Important Notice to Followers of This Page

I want to let everyone know that this page is no longer the official page for the M1 Food Pantry. The pantry’s operations and leadership transitioned to a different group approximately 18–24 months ago, and since that time this page has not been affiliated with the current organization.

Because many people continue to follow this page for updates, I feel it’s important to also recognize the long history of the pantry and the people who built it.

The food pantry was originally founded in 1981 by Patty Clark and her late husband Melvin, who began the work from their own sense of calling and service to the community. In 1986, they made the pantry a full-time mission, and for more than three decades Patty, Melvin, their daughter Teresa, and a dedicated volunteer team faithfully operated, expanded, and sustained the pantry for the entire Morgan County community until approximately 2023–2024.

At that time, the operation of the pantry was stripped from the founding members and their dedicated team by the Pastor and a small group of his associates. They conspired with members of the Gleaners Food Bank to create the false illusion of mismanagement to force the change in operations.

This page now exists only to preserve the historical record of the pantry’s founding, mission, and original service to the community. For current information, hours, or updates, please refer to the official page operated by the current leadership team.

Thank you for your understanding.
