Devotion: "Do It Again"

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)
*"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? IThe song "Do It Again" by Elevation Worship is a powerful anthem of remembrance and trust. It is built on a foundation of historical faithfulness—reminding us that the God who parted the Red Sea, the God who kept His promises to the patriarchs, and the God who has been present in our own past struggles is the same God who stands with us today.

The Foundation of Remembrance
The chorus, "You made a way, where there was no way, and I believe, You'll do it again," is not a request for a miracle; it is a declaration of identity. It shifts our focus from the size of our current obstacle to the character of our God. When we face uncertainty, our instinct is often to panic or retreat. This song calls us to pause and look backward before we look forward.

In the Bible, God often instructed His people to build altars or set up stones of remembrance (like in Joshua 4) specifically so they would not forget what He had done. We need these "stones" in our own lives—moments where we clearly saw God’s hand move. When we sing, "I've seen You move, come move the mountains," we are fueling our current faith with the evidence of our past experiences.

Trusting in the "Not Yet"
The beauty of this devotion lies in the tension between "I've seen You move" and "I believe You'll do it again." There is often a waiting period between our past victories and our future needs. This song invites us to inhabit that waiting period with confidence rather than doubt.

It reminds us that God is not just a God of the past or the future, but a God of the process. He is working even when we cannot see the breakthrough. Our faith is not in the outcome itself, but in the One who holds the outcome in His hands.

Reflection
Take a moment today to do what the song suggests: remember.
* What is a "mountain" God has moved for you in the past?
* How does that memory change the way you view your current situation?
* Can you surrender the how and the when of your current need, resting instead in the certainty that He is still the same faithful God?

Prayer
Lord, thank You for the ways You have shown up in my life before. You have been faithful when I was faithless, and You have made a way when I saw no path forward. Today, I choose to place my trust in Your character. I believe that because You are the same yesterday, today, and forever, You are already at work in my current situation. Help me to walk in that confidence, resting in Your timing and Your power. Amen.

Anointing with Love - The Example of Mary of Bethany

In the Gospel of John, we encounter Mary of Bethany, a woman who exemplifies the essence of devotion and love. She is best known for her act of anointing Jesus' feet with expensive perfume and wiping them with her hair (John 12:3). This profound gesture goes beyond mere demonstration; it reveals Mary's heart—a heart fully surrendered to Jesus.

In a world often filled with distractions and demands for our attention, Mary teaches us the importance of prioritizing our relationship with Christ. Her willingness to break social norms and lavish her love on Jesus reminds us that genuine worship is not transactional but deeply personal. Mary did not count the cost; she understood the value of being in the presence of the One who loved her unconditionally.

As we reflect on Mary of Bethany, let us examine our own lives. Are we making room for moments of intimacy with Jesus, setting aside our distractions to sit at His feet? Let us cultivate a spirit that seeks to honor Him in every aspect of our lives, pouring out our love and devotion without reservation.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for the example of Mary of Bethany. Help me to draw near to you with a heart of worship and love. May I be willing to offer my best to you and prioritize our relationship above all else. Amen.

Amazing Grace – My Chains Are Gone

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

The hymn "Amazing Grace" reminds us of the profound transformation that can occur when we encounter God's grace. The lines "my chains are gone" encapsulate the essence of salvation and liberation. When we accept Christ, we experience a spiritual freedom that releases us from the burdens of sin, guilt, and despair.

Consider the weight of the chains we carry: regrets, past mistakes, fears, and insecurities. Each of these can bind us, preventing us from living fully in the joy and peace that God offers. But through grace, we are not only forgiven; we are set free! Like the prodigal son who returned home, we can shed the chains of our past and embrace a future filled with hope.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank You for Your amazing grace that has set me free from my chains. Help me to live in this freedom daily, releasing my burdens and trusting in Your plans for my life. Remind me that no matter what I face, I am empowered by Your grace to rise above my circumstances. May I be a testament to Your love and mercy, shining Your light in the world around me. Amen.

Take a moment to reflect: What chains are you carrying today? Write them down and, in prayer, surrender them to God, trusting that His grace is sufficient for your every need.

Remember, your past does not define you. Through God’s amazing grace, you are a new creation, free to walk confidently in His light!

"Because He Lives"

John 14:19 (NIV) - "Because I live, you also will live."

As we celebrate Easter, we are reminded of the profound truth encapsulated in the hymn "Because He Lives." The resurrection of Jesus Christ not only transformed the narrative of grief and despair into one of hope and joy but also assures us of our own lives and eternal future.

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, the resurrection stands as a beacon of hope. Jesus's triumph over death assures us that, just as He lives, we too are granted the gift of life—not only in the here and now but for all eternity. This promise propels us to face each day with courage, knowing that we are not alone in our struggles.

Consider the implications of "Because He Lives." His resurrection brings:

1. Hope in Despair: When we face difficult times, Jesus reminds us that there’s always hope. His victory over the grave encourages us to trust in the goodness of God, no matter the circumstances.

2. Purpose in Life: Because He lives, we are called to live out our faith with purpose. Our lives reflect His light to those around us, inspiring others to seek the same hope we have found.

3. Eternal Assurance: The resurrection guarantees our own resurrection. We are promised a future where pain and suffering are no more, and we will one day dwell with Him forever.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and for His victory over sin and death. As we celebrate His resurrection, help us to live in the hope that comes from knowing You are alive. Give us the strength to face our challenges, the courage to share Your love with others, and the assurance of our eternal life with You. May we live each day rejoicing, for we know that because You live, we too shall live. Amen.

Take a moment today to reflect on the areas of your life where you need to embrace hope. Consider how you can share the message of "Because He Lives" with those around you. Let this truth be your strength and your song this Easter and beyond.

Happy Easter! Remember, He is alive, and so are we in Him!

The Basin and the Bread

John 13:14–15

"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."

On this night, Jesus did two things that seemed completely upside down. First, he took off his outer robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and did the "dirty work" of a servant by washing the dusty, calloused feet of his friends—including the ones he knew would soon betray and desert him.

Second, he sat at a table and broke bread, identifying it as his body, and shared a cup, calling it his blood. He took the most common elements of a meal and turned them into a lasting promise of his presence and sacrifice.

Maundy Thursday reminds us that Christ’s love isn't just a feeling; it’s an action. It is found in the basin (service) and the bread (communion). He didn't just tell us he loved us; he showed us by stooping low to serve and giving everything to save.

Today, as you go about your routines, look for your "basin." Where is there a "dusty foot" that needs washing? Who needs a word of grace, a helping hand, or a seat at your table? We love because he first loved us.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for stooping down to meet me in my brokenness. On this Holy Thursday, soften my heart. Help me to see others through your eyes of compassion. Teach me to serve without seeking credit and to love others with the same radical, selfless love you showed in the Upper Room. Amen.

Tuesday of Holy Week - The Fig Tree and Jesus’ Teachings

Matthew 21:18-22

18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.
20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.
21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

On Tuesday, Jesus encounters a fig tree that bears no fruit, and He curses it. This moment symbolizes God's disappointment over unfruitfulness. Following this, Jesus teaches His disciples about faith and the power of prayer.

Consider the significance of being fruitful in our spiritual lives. What fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace—are evident in you? Are there areas where you feel barren or unproductive? Reflect on how you can cultivate a deeper faith and reliance on God in your daily life.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to bear fruit in my life. Teach me to cultivate a relationship with You that overflows into love and good works. May my faith be strong and my prayers fervent. Amen.
