Historic Tid-Bit: Trinity’s tid-bit focuses on Dan Rustika. The stories are many about Verger Dan. Oh, he did not like to be called Danny! Dan told the story of “I think it’s the will of God that I came here (Trinity) and took this job.” During WWII he was assigned to loading bombs aboard B17’s & B24’s. A time in the pub he noted a Brit smiling at him so he ordered a pint for the man in return he was asked to meet his wife and have dinner at their home. Afterwards they walked to the side of the church on the property where Dan was shown a row of graves. The Brit said, “My family’s been taking care of this church since the 15th century. I’m the last one. Our son was killed at Dunkirk.” Not long after that Dan attended an ordination in GR. He said, “It came to me…I’m taking that man’s son’s place. I think it’s the will of God that I’m here.”

Dan was born on Perrinville Hill known then as the fairgrounds, 1920. Attending St. Mary’s School and known as the “sisters’ pet” due to his running errands for them. Served in the UP Civilian Conservation Corps and after the war Marshall Foundry and Eaton. Dan was laid off as defense orders had been cut back. Enter Fr. Tom Frisby’s office renovation. Trinity’s odd jobs pathed the way for Dan to become the Verger under Fr. Sam West leading to Sexton when Jun Twist, Sr. Warden asked Dan if he would like to clean the church. Fr. Tom tried to “steal” Dan for St. John’s Detroit and a Canon from our Cathedral. But Dan remained until the end.

Living alone most of his life he took his religious duty of Verger and Sexton seriously. Let’s raise a glass of wine to Dan. And yes, Dan. I believe it’s the will of God that you were with Trinity for so many years.

EDIT: Dan started as Verger 1960 with Fr. Tom Frisby, Fr. Sam West and curates Fr. Bill Dodd and Fr. Warner White: 30 years estimated as Verger/Sexton. Dan died 2004 and his cremains are in Trinity’s Memorial Garden. 💐
