Live music was provided for the memorial service by Trudie Edinger, shown here warming up the organ, which is located in the loft. The hymns that she played included some old favorites:

“Abide with Me” ( #836 in the “Glory to God” hymnal) and

“For All the Saints” ( #326).

I’m back from the memorial service for Rev. Ellie Cowherd, which was held this morning at Faith Presbyterian Church in Medford. This photo shows the decorated sanctuary as it looked about 30 minutes before the service began.

In line waiting to vote. Hope to be done by 11 pm. So nice that so many care. Glad it’s not snowing!

Later: I was not able to vote until after 12:20 am on November 6. It took a full five hours! I am in awe of the voters in Marlton, NJ who stayed in line for three, four, and even five hours, even after the sun went down and the wind picked up. Maybe some are masochistic or maybe they just love living in a democracy and getting to vote. Our poll workers were exhausted by their long day, but obviously impressed by the dedication of the voters. I consider this phenomenon to be a good sign.

Several days ago, we received the sad news of the passing of Rev. Tom Purchase, shown here at CPC's sunrise service on April 20, 2014. Tom served as our interim pastor between the time when Patty Epprecht retired and Lory Ryan was called to our pulpit.

Tom was noted for his intellectual bend, but also for his ability to relate to children, using his substantial collection of hand puppets, such as Vincent the Vulture and Lyudmila the Chicken. I'll make a trip into the archives and see if I can find some photos.

Thanks to Doug Derry and Debby Brincivalli for informing us of Tom's passing, and to Elaine Grippo and Katherine Primus for their memories of Tom.

Prayers for the people of Cuba as they deal with a second day of country-wide power outages. Of special concern are our Presbyterian friends there and the thousands of Cubans who get pure drinking water from water-purification systems that we helped to install following the model of Living Waters for the World. These LWW systems do a good job cleaning up the water, whether it comes from a well, a decrepit municipal system, or another source. But these LWW systems need electricity to run the pumps that move the water, and the ozonators that do the final purification. CPC may be closed, but those who installed the systems at Union de Reyes, CANIP, Gibara, La Playa, Holguin, and other sites live on and will continue to be available to help keep these systems functioning in the years ahead. Among these water heroes are Jerry Goode, Charlie Matthews, Mike Rugge, Rev. Lory Ryan, and Kary LaFors, to name only a few of the many. But these systems require electricity, so we pray for a restoration of the Cuban power grid.

The entire island was initially left without power on Friday when its main power plant failed impacting 10 million people.

As many of you know by now, we are mourning the loss of Brooke Farrow, who passed away on September 23, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 11 am at Haines Middle School 6th Grade Center, located at 162 Stokes Road in Medford. Faith Presbyterian Church, which is next door, will open its parking lot if there is not enough room in the school’s lot.

Bradley Funeral Home is handling arrangements, and a lengthy obituary is available on their website.
