to Bethel AME who are celebrating their 150th anniversary on August 16th at 3 pm in 🇺🇸

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, one of Cedar Rapids' oldest Black institutions, will host its 2026 Vacation Bible School, inviting children and families to participate in a week of faith-based learning, activities, and community fellowship.

Time: 6:00 p.m.–8:30 p.m.
Program: August 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
Ages: 6–13 years old

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church traces its roots to the founding of the AME denomination in the eastern United States following the American Revolution. The denomination later grew into a major national religious organization.

The Cedar Rapids congregation was established in the early 1870s, with construction of its first church at the current location beginning in 1874. The present brick structure was built in 1931–1932, when the congregation was officially renamed Bethel AME.

Throughout its history, like many Black churches across the nation, Bethel AME Church has also been an important gathering place for social, civic, and community engagement within Cedar Rapids’ community.

Our monthly board meeting is planned for this week.

On Tuesday, our Build A Life project will participate in an important trades spotlight event for young students at Hawkeye Downs in .

In Iowa City this week disturbing news on the subject of race - harmful social media content.

We are one human race ❤️

The phrase "one human race" emphasizes shared humanity over social or physical differences, promoting unity.

Scientifically, modern humans are one species (Homo sapiens) with minimal genetic variation, supporting the view that racial classifications are social constructs rather than biological realities.
April is Fair Housing Month, it is important to promote equality in our communities and neighborhoods 🏘

When stories like this occur, it certainly causes pause. Hatred, bigotry & fear are too common in Modern America 🇺🇸

We pray 🙏🏻 the church will set the example Jesus left for us by loving both our neighbors and our enemies. Then we, like King, can pray “Grant that all men will come together and discover that as we solve the crisis and solve these problems—the international problems, the problems of atomic energy, the problems of nuclear energy, and yes, even the race problem—let us join together in a great fellowship of love and bow down at the feet of Jesus.”

There were reports of harmful materials and messages found in Iowa City neighborhoods in Sunday, April 26th.
