A MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY When segregation was in its infamy, and prejudice was policy, more than sixty-six years ago the Lord God Almighty placed His hand upon shoulders of this humble, yet courageous man in Marion, South Carolina, the Bishop R.F. Davis Sr. In a time when opportunity was denied and dignity was challenged, he began with only $2.50 in his pocket and five suffering children looking to him for strength. That small sum could not measure the size of his calling. His children did not grow up shielded from hardship; they felt the strain of scarcity and the sting of a segregated South. Yet they also witnessed something greater than struggle. They witnessed faith refusing to bow. While laws attempted to limit him and society tried to confine him, he built. Brick by brick, prayer by prayer, he engineered fifteen churches from the ground. Each structure stood as a quiet rebellion against injustice, a sacred declaration that Black faith could not be legislated away. From Marion to the eastern seaboard, to Jamaica in the West Indies and Nigeria in Africa, his obedience carried the gospel beyond borders meant to restrict him. Through his ministry, souls were saved, families strengthened, pastors trained, and leaders raised. The Greater Highway Churches of Christ Inc. became more than an organization; it became a testimony carved out of perseverance. Though he now rests from his labor, his legacy breathes in every sanctuary and every life touched. In Black history and in sacred history, his name stands as proof that suffering endured with faith can build generations. PASTOR, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, MAN OF GOD, WE HONOR AND SALUTE YOU.

A MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY: Bishop R.F. Davis (March 15, 1921 – October 19, 2017)

In the late 1940s, during the height of segregation, the Lord God Almighty anointed Bishop R.F. Davis to establish a ministry that would stand as a testament to faith, resilience, and community empowerment. With only $2.50 in his pocket and the responsibility of providing for five children, he embarked on a remarkable journey of service and leadership.

Bishop Davis was the founder of what is now known as The Greater Highway Churches of Christ, Inc., headquartered in Marion, South Carolina. Through his vision and dedication, he built and engineered 15 churches from the ground up and facilitated the affiliation of numerous congregations along the eastern seaboard of the United States, as well as in Jamaica and Nigeria. His greatest legacy, however, lies in the countless individuals who have given their lives to Christ through his ministry.

Beyond the physical churches he constructed, Bishop Davis served as a mentor and spiritual guide to numerous pastors, ministers, and entrepreneurs, many of whom owe their foundational growth to his unwavering leadership. His influence extends beyond denominational boundaries, shaping communities and inspiring generations.

On the morning of October 19, 2017, Bishop R.F. Davis departed this life, leaving behind an indelible legacy of faith and perseverance. Today, we honor and celebrate his extraordinary contributions as a cornerstone of Black history. His life’s work continues to resonate, and his memory remains cherished.

We love and miss you, sir.
