This will be the last post from the Forest Lawn Presbyterian Church. COVID took a heavy toll and in 2021 we officially merge ecumenically with First Presbyterian here in Marion. It was, to say the least, a very sad day. For ten years I had prayed that God would light a fire there, in that place, to be blessing to this community. When we locked the door, we felt as if He had not listened. Then, we met Pastor Rico and his congregation, a unique presence in the body of Christ in Marion. There were some hurdles along the way, some money- changers to be dealt with, but in December of 2022, we passed the legacy of so many generations into the hands of Rico and his congregation. And tonight, as a celebrate their first service inside the renovated building, I know three things:

1. God was listening, He just had a different plan;
2. The worship of the Lord knows no language.
3. Baptists are the only ones to know their way around a fried chicken!

Hallelujah, we will praise him.

"What if, however, the essence of Christianity is salvation by grace, salvation not because of what we do but because of what Christ has done for us? [This is at the root of Christian doctrine and theology.] Belief that you are accepted by God by sheer grace is profoundly humbling. The people who are fanatics, then, are so not because they are too committed to the gospel but because they’re not committed to it enough." - Tim Keller

"Christianity not only leads its members to believe people of other faiths have goodness and wisdom to offer, it also leads them to expect that many will live lives morally superior to their own. Most people in our culture believe that, if there is a God, we can relate to him and go to heaven through leading a good life. Let’s call this the “moral improvement” view. Christianity teaches the very opposite. In the Christian understanding, Jesus does not tell us how to live so we can merit salvation. Rather, he comes to forgive and save us through his life and death in our place. God’s grace does not come to people who morally outperform others, but to those who admit their failure to perform and who acknowledge their need for a Savior." - Tim Keller

The purpose of the church is not to judge; neither to condemn nor condone. But to live into the teachings of Jesus Christ and model the love of Christ to a world sorely in need of that love.
